Union Minister for Consumers, Food and Public Distribution, Textiles, Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyus Goyal has launched the subsidized sale of Chana Dal under the brand name ‘Bharat Dal’ priced at Rs 60 per kg for a kg pack and Rs 55 per kg for a 30kg pack.

The introduction of ‘Bharat Dal’ is an important step taken by the central government to make pulses available to consumers at affordable prices by converting the government’s chana stocks into chana dal.

The grinding and packing of the Chana Dal is undertaken by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) for distribution through its retail outlets in Delhi-NCR and also through the outlets of NCCF, Kendriya Bhandar and Safal. Chana dal, under this arrangement, is also made available to state governments for supplies under their welfare schemes, police, prisons and also for distribution through their consumer co-operative outlets.

Chana is the most abundantly produced legume in India and consumed in different forms across India. Whole chana is soaked and boiled to make salad and roasted chana is served as a snack. Fried chana dal can also be used as an alternative to tur dal, curries and soups. Chana besan is an important raw material for namkeens and sweets. Chana has multiple nutritional health benefits as it is rich in fiber, iron, potassium, vitamin B, selenium beta carotene and choline which are required by human body to control anemia, blood sugar, bone health etc. and also for mental health.
