Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari to launch much awaited Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) on 22ndna August 2023. This program represents a significant step forward in the government’s efforts to improve road safety by raising the safety standards of motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes in India.

The program aims to provide a tool for automotive customers to benchmark the crash safety of motor vehicles available on the market. Under this program, automakers can volunteer their cars tested to Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. Based on the car’s performance in testing, the car will receive Adult Occupant Star Ratings (AOP ) and child occupants (COP) ). Potential car customers can refer to these star ratings to compare the safety standards of different vehicles and make their purchasing decision accordingly.

Demand for safer cars is expected to increase, encouraging automakers to meet customer needs. With high safety standards, Indian cars will be better able to compete in the global market, increasing the export potential of India’s automakers. The program is expected to develop a safety-sensitive automotive market in India.
