Jitesh Sharma Credits Gilchrist for Wicketkeeping Skills

Jitesh Sharma, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) wicketkeeper-batter, has revealed that his passion for wicketkeeping was significantly influenced by legendary Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist. In a recent video shared on IPL’s social media, the 31-year-old elaborated on the essential techniques that underpin effective wicketkeeping, emphasizing the importance of proper posture and foot positioning. His insights showcase not just his admiration for Gilchrist but also his commitment to the craft of wicketkeeping.

Technique and Training

In his explanation, Jitesh detailed several fundamental aspects of wicketkeeping. He stressed the necessity of maintaining a strong technique, particularly through squatting and optimizing foot placement. “For me, I always try that my shoulder and my knee should be like a box,” he stated. This alignment, he believes, allows him to be agile and responsive, ensuring that his body stays in a defensive posture. He further elaborated on how positioning his head close to the ball helps him maintain an active second line of defense when catching. Such technical insights underline his dedication to improving his skills on the field.

Journey Through IPL

Jitesh’s journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) began when he was initially bought by the Mumbai Indians in the 2016 auction. However, he did not get the opportunity to play in any matches that season. His fortunes changed in 2022 when he was signed by the Punjab Kings, where he quickly established himself as a formidable finisher. During the 2022 season, he scored 234 runs at an impressive strike rate of 163.64 and followed it up with 309 runs at a strike rate of 156.06 in 2023. His performances have solidified his reputation in the league and earned him a spot on the RCB roster for IPL 2025.

Current Performance and Upcoming Matches

As the IPL 2025 progresses, Jitesh Sharma has made a notable impact with RCB. In just four matches, he has accumulated 85 runs, boasting an average of 42.50 and an impressive strike rate of 184. RCB is set to face the Delhi Capitals in their upcoming match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. With his skills honed and confidence high, Jitesh aims to contribute significantly to his team’s success as they strive for victory in the tournament.
