Shah Rukh Khan’s Bold Move: Andre Russell Transformed into KKR’s ‘Power Coach’ After Exit from IPL

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore has revealed the surprising decision to release Andre Russell from the squad, followed by an immediate offer for him to take on the role of “Power Coach” for IPL 2026. This decision, made in collaboration with team owner Shah Rukh Khan, comes after Russell’s retirement from the IPL on November 30. The Jamaican all-rounder, who has had a remarkable career with KKR, will now transition to a support staff position while continuing to play in T20 leagues worldwide.

Reasons Behind Russell’s Release

Mysore explained that the decision to release Russell was influenced by the auction rules rather than purely cricketing reasons. Although Russell’s contract was valued at ₹12 crore, retaining him would have resulted in a ₹18 crore deduction from KKR’s purse, as he was classified as the franchise’s “Player 1” in the previous season. By releasing him, KKR regained that full amount for the upcoming mini-auction. Mysore admitted that this choice was emotionally challenging, describing it as “strange” since Russell had never before been sent back to the auction pool. The all-rounder later expressed his struggles with the decision, revealing he experienced “sleepless nights” following the initial discussions. Additionally, Mysore noted that Russell, who will be 38 by the start of IPL 2026, had begun contemplating life after professional cricket, a sentiment that resonated with Khan, who encouraged the transition.

A Deep Emotional Connection

The bond between KKR and Russell runs deep, as Mysore humorously remarked that he has likely spoken to Russell more than to his own wife over the past 11 years. The franchise has supported Russell through various challenges, including a year-long anti-doping suspension in 2017, during which KKR provided training support to help him maintain his mental strength. Despite facing age-related challenges and injuries in recent seasons, Mysore praised Russell’s exceptional athleticism and recalled his powerful performances, including memorable sixes that struck the sight screen. This long-standing relationship has made the decision to part ways particularly poignant for both the franchise and the player.

The Emergence of the ‘Power Coach’ Role

The concept of the “Power Coach” role emerged spontaneously during discussions about Russell’s future. Mysore and Khan aimed to create a position that reflected the qualities that made Russell one of the most formidable players in the IPL. The title “Power Coach” was chosen to symbolize the strength and impact Russell brought to the game. Russell embraced the idea, stating that this new role provides him with a sense of purpose and excitement. His responsibilities will include mentoring players who take on similar roles within the team, sharing his insights on how to approach high-pressure situations, particularly in terms of hitting sixes during tense chases. Mysore believes this transition is beneficial for both KKR and Russell, noting that the former star is now “completely at peace” with his decision and eager to contribute in this new capacity.
