Secretary-General Highlights Enormous Challenges Facing the Region
UN Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres addressed the League of Arab States in Baghdad, emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the protection of Palestinian rights. He condemned the recent violence and called for the unconditional release of hostages and the flow of humanitarian aid. Guterres also highlighted the importance of a two-state solution for lasting peace in the region, while addressing various crises in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, and Iraq.
Urgent Call for Ceasefire in Gaza
During his remarks, Guterres expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Gaza, particularly following the October 7 attacks by Hamas. He stated that no act of violence could justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people. The Secretary-General urged for an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of hostages. He also stressed the necessity for humanitarian aid to flow freely into Gaza, calling for an end to the blockade. Guterres warned against Israel’s plans to expand ground operations, asserting that the United Nations would not support any aid efforts that do not comply with international law and humanitarian principles.
Addressing Regional Conflicts
Guterres turned his attention to Lebanon, where he reiterated the importance of respecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as outlined in Security Council resolution 1701. He welcomed the commitment of Lebanese officials to maintain a state monopoly on weapons and encouraged the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon with the support of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). In Syria, he emphasized the need for a Syrian-led political process that ensures the rights of all citizens, regardless of their background, as a pathway to peace and economic recovery.
Efforts for Stability in Yemen and Sudan
The Secretary-General also addressed the situation in Yemen, where Houthi attacks have impacted regional and global economies. He welcomed the announcement from Oman regarding a ceasefire between the United States and the Houthis, urging for a negotiated political settlement. In Sudan, Guterres highlighted the need for renewed multilateral engagement to address violence and humanitarian crises. He expressed gratitude to the Arab League and the African Union for their coordination efforts in tackling these challenges.
Progress and Future Aspirations in Iraq
In his concluding remarks, Guterres acknowledged Iraq’s progress since regaining sovereignty in 2004, noting advancements in institutional strengthening and humanitarian assistance. He expressed hope that outstanding issues would be resolved through dialogue. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq is committed to supporting the country as it works towards a peaceful and prosperous future. Guterres concluded by emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration in resolving conflicts and building a better future for all nations involved.
