Scott Wiener Advocates for Big Tech Transparency on AI Risks
This is not California State Senator Scott Wiener’s first effort to tackle the potential dangers posed by artificial intelligence (AI). Following a fierce backlash from Silicon Valley against his previous AI safety bill, SB 1047, which sought to hold tech companies accountable for the risks associated with their AI systems, Wiener has introduced a new proposal, SB 53. This latest bill is currently awaiting Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision, and it appears to have garnered more support from the tech community compared to its predecessor.
New Bill Gains Support

This requirement aims to address significant risks associated with AI, including potential contributions to human fatalities, cyberattacks, and the development of chemical weapons. While many AI companies voluntarily release safety reports, these documents are often inconsistent and lack regulatory oversight. Additionally, SB 53 proposes the creation of CalCompute, a state-operated cloud computing cluster designed to support AI research beyond the resources of major tech firms.

OpenAI recently urged Governor Newsom to align AI compliance with federal standards, while venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz raised concerns that California’s regulations could infringe upon interstate commerce.
