Sarbananda Sonowal Celebrates Literature at Assam Book Fair
The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, attended the Assam Book Fair in Khanapara, Guwahati, showcasing the importance of books as sources of knowledge and enlightenment. He described book fairs as “pilgrimage sites of knowledge” that foster intellectual growth and contribute to a thoughtful society.
While addressing a gathering of visitors and publishers at the fair, Sonowal emphasized the transformative power of books. He stated, “Books illuminate minds, cleanse thought and enrich society across generations.” He underscored that literature embodies the creativity and conscience of a community, playing an essential role in nurturing an intellectually progressive nation.
Encouraging the youth to embrace reading, Sonowal remarked, “Every step taken to promote reading is a firm step toward the intellectual advancement of a people.” The significant turnout of readers at the fair signified Assam’s positive trajectory towards becoming a more literate society. He noted that books are like gifts that can be opened multiple times, each opportunity offering fresh insights.
Reflecting on the legacy of notable Assamese cultural and literary figures, Sonowal acknowledged how their works have shaped the identity of the Assamese people, projecting Assam’s voice to the larger world. He quoted philosopher Francis Bacon, stating, “Reading makes a full man,” and cautioned against replacing substantial reading experiences with superficial digital consumption. “Social media can’t provide the depth and critical thinking that books do,” he commented.
Recognizing the shift in reading habits due to advancements in technology, Sonowal pointed out that digital mediums like e-books and audiobooks can complement traditional reading methods, enhancing accessibility to knowledge. He highlighted the challenge of revitalizing the joy of reading, particularly among youth.
Moreover, Sonowal stressed the need to modernize libraries, especially in smaller towns, and to present Assamese literature in contemporary, reader-friendly formats. He encouraged young people to balance their aspirations for modern success with a strong connection to their mother tongue, remarking that cultural progress does not require sacrificing linguistic roots.
During his visit to the fair, Sonowal engaged with various publishers and readers, purchasing several notable works including _Mrito Ishwar_ by Prof. Bhawani Pegu and titles such as _Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika_ by Anuradha Sharma Pujari and _Mur Jail Jatrar Kahini_ by Babul Kumar Baruah. His book selections highlight his dedication to promoting reading and supporting Assamese literature.
