Samsung Unveils Ambitious 360-Degree Foldable Phone Design

Samsung is making waves in the tech world with a newly discovered patent for a groundbreaking foldable phone that can fold both inwards and outwards. This innovative device features a sleek 360-degree design, allowing users to expand its inner screen into a larger display or fold it back to serve as a cover display. While Samsung previously showcased a prototype of a similar device in 2023, the company has yet to announce any plans for a commercial release of this exciting new technology.

Revolutionary Design Details Emerge

The details of Samsung’s foldable phone are outlined in patent application US 2025/0107013 A1, recently published by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This document reveals intricate diagrams and specifications that highlight the phone’s unique 360-degree folding capability. Unlike traditional foldable devices that typically feature two panels, this design incorporates a large, slim display that can be folded in two distinct configurations. The innovative design includes two “folding areas” that facilitate both inward and outward folding, setting it apart from existing models.

Equipped with flexible OLED screens and ultra-thin glass (UTG), this foldable phone promises to deliver a versatile user experience. The dual folding functionality is made possible through a sophisticated multi-layered structure that utilizes thin plates, allowing for seamless transitions between configurations. This design approach suggests that Samsung may eliminate the need for a separate cover display, further enhancing the device’s usability.

Camera Features and Functionality

The patent application also reveals intriguing details about the phone’s camera setup. The outer portion of the device features a raised island housing three rear cameras, which remain accessible whether the phone is folded inwards or outwards. However, the patent does not clarify whether the screen will include an under-display camera, leaving some questions about the device’s full capabilities unanswered.

Samsung’s commitment to innovation is evident in its recent history of showcasing various foldable designs. The company has introduced prototypes like the Flex G and Flex S, which hint at the potential for tri-fold smartphones in the future. Additionally, the Flex In & Out prototype, unveiled in 2023, demonstrated a similar 360-degree folding screen concept. Despite these advancements, Samsung has not yet confirmed any plans for commercializing either the current design or the previously showcased prototypes.

The Future of Foldable Technology

As Samsung continues to explore the possibilities of foldable technology, the excitement surrounding its latest patent underscores the company’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of smartphone design. The 360-degree foldable phone represents a significant leap forward, combining functionality with sleek aesthetics. While consumers eagerly await further announcements, the potential for this innovative device to reshape the smartphone landscape remains a topic of great interest within the tech community.
