Samsung to Introduce ‘Hey Plex’ Voice Command in Upcoming Galaxy Smartphones: Report
Samsung is reportedly on the verge of transforming how users interact with artificial intelligence on its Galaxy smartphones. New industry insights indicate that the tech giant is developing a voice command feature that would enable users to access the Perplexity AI assistant simply by saying “Hey Plex.” This innovation could significantly enhance user experience, allowing for hands-free operation similar to existing voice-activated assistants on Android devices.
Perplexity Hotword Found in App Code
Recent investigations into the Perplexity app’s Android code have unveiled intriguing details about the potential voice activation feature. Conducted by Android Authority in collaboration with the tipster AssembleDebug, the review of version 2.69.3 of the app revealed text strings that suggest users could activate the Perplexity assistant via a hotword, even when their phone screens are off. To utilize this feature, users would need to consent to voice data collection and accept the app’s terms. The setup process may involve recording a voice sample to ensure the system accurately recognizes the user’s speech. Additionally, users will have the option to delete the stored hotword and record a new voice sample if necessary. For the feature to function effectively, access to the device’s microphone will be essential.
Built-in Microphones
The code analysis indicates that the hotword feature will only operate through the phone’s built-in microphones. If users connect Bluetooth earphones or external microphones, the app may prompt them to disconnect these accessories. This design choice suggests that the voice trigger relies on direct access to the phone’s internal hardware. Furthermore, the review highlighted new system-level services associated with Samsung devices, including call-in actions linked to hotword access and a dedicated service for wake word detection. These services appear to utilize Samsung’s proprietary hotword software tools, which manage voice activation across Galaxy smartphones.
Expected Debut With Galaxy S26 Series
In addition to the voice command feature, the app package reportedly contains image files that indicate Perplexity may come preloaded on select Galaxy models. Previous reports have hinted that Samsung could introduce this partnership alongside the One UI 8.5 software version. This update is anticipated to coincide with the launch of the Galaxy S26 series, expected early next year. If Samsung follows through with these plans, the Galaxy S26 lineup could represent the first significant integration of Perplexity into Galaxy smartphones, providing users with a new and innovative way to access AI features through voice commands.
