SAI Launches Sports Sciences Workshop for Combat Coaches

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has kicked off a four-day Sports Sciences Workshop for coaches specializing in combat sports at its Sports Science Division in New Delhi. This workshop brings together trainers from key combat disciplines such as Boxing, Wrestling, and Judo, aiming to enhance the incorporation of sports science into regular coaching routines.

Focus on Scientifically-Driven Training

This immersive program emphasizes the application of scientific principles to training methodologies. Coaches will receive training on various topics, including functional strength training, plyometrics, and periodized resistance training specifically tailored for combat sports. The workshop also covers core principles of exercise physiology that are essential for achieving elite performance.

Brig. (Dr.) Bibhu Kalyan Nayak, the Director-cum-Head of SAI’s Sports Science Division, highlighted the continued support from Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya and Secretary (Sports) in promoting the integration of sports science among coaches. “These focused engagements with coaches, supported by sports scientists, will positively contribute to India’s medal prospects. Our vision is athlete-centric, coach-led, and backed by sports science,” he stated.

Addressing Injury Management

Another critical component of the workshop is the prevention and management of common injuries that occur in combat sports, particularly shoulder injuries. Coaches will learn evidence-based warm-up protocols, strength and stability training, and scientific load management strategies to reduce injury risk and enhance athlete safety.

In addition to injury prevention, the workshop encompasses dedicated modules on nutrition, recovery science, anti-doping awareness, and applied sports psychology. This holistic approach aims to support long-term athlete performance and career longevity.

Expert Insights and Future Collaborations

The inaugural session featured insights from Prof. (Dr.) Deepak Joshi, Director of the Sports Injury Centre at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College. He underlined the transformational potential of integrating sports science, sports medicine, and injury management in shaping athletes’ careers. “This collaboration will be a boon for India’s sports ecosystem,” he remarked.

To further strengthen this collaboration, SAI and the Sports Injury Centre plan to sign a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). With the in-principle approval from the Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, this agreement will ensure that athletes referred by SAI receive priority treatment and seamless management back to training and competition.

Under the proposed framework, the Sports Injury Centre will handle advanced sports medicine and surgical interventions, while SAI will oversee applied sports science rehabilitation. This partnership promises to guarantee safe returns to competition for Indian athletes, enhancing their journey towards excellence.
