Russia Reports India’s ‘Renewed Interest’ in Crude Imports Amid Ongoing Iran Crisis

Russia has announced that India is showing renewed interest in importing larger quantities of Russian crude oil. This development comes amid increasing disruptions in global energy supplies, particularly following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to recent U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran. The situation has raised concerns about potential impacts on oil prices and supply chains, prompting both nations to reassess their energy strategies.

Moscow Sees Fresh Demand from India

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak stated that there are indications of India’s heightened interest in Russian crude oil. Speaking to state-run Rossiya 1 TV, Novak emphasized that the ongoing energy crisis could lead the European Union to reconsider its stance on Russian hydrocarbon imports. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit for nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply and a significant portion of liquefied natural gas exports, has faced disruptions due to Iranian military responses. This situation poses a risk of supply shortages for major importers, including India, China, and Japan, potentially driving up global crude prices.

Discounts to Asian Buyers May Narrow

As tensions escalate in the region, Russian media has reported that the conflict could enable Moscow to reduce the substantial discounts it has been offering to Asian buyers, including India. In recent months, Russia has emerged as India’s largest crude supplier, although its lead over Saudi Arabia has diminished. Data indicates that Russian oil supplies to India averaged just over 1 million barrels per day in February, a slight decline from previous months. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has increased its exports to India, reaching the highest levels in nearly six years, further intensifying competition in the Asian market.

India Monitoring Gulf Crisis Closely

In light of the escalating crisis, Russia has expressed its willingness to support India with energy supplies should disruptions occur due to tensions in the Middle East. Iran’s military actions have targeted oil refineries and production sites, leading to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz for commercial activities. Despite these challenges, India’s Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has reassured markets of the country’s preparedness, stating that India has sufficient reserves of crude oil and petroleum products to manage any short-term disruptions. Puri highlighted that India’s energy strategy focuses on balancing availability, affordability, and sustainability.

Adequate Stocks, Diversified Sourcing

India maintains approximately 25 days’ worth of crude oil and petroleum product stocks, equating to about eight weeks of total inventory. Notably, only 40% of India’s crude imports transit through the Strait of Hormuz, with the remaining 60% sourced from other regions. Indian energy firms continue to import Russian crude under existing contracts, providing an additional buffer against potential supply disruptions. With cargo movements from West Asia affected, Indian refiners are actively exploring alternative sources. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has established a 24/7 control room to monitor fuel stocks and supply positions nationwide, ensuring that public sector oil marketing companies maintain adequate inventories. Government sources emphasize that India’s priorities remain focused on ensuring uninterrupted fuel availability and safeguarding the interests of consumers, particularly the significant Indian population residing in the Gulf region.
