Revolutionizing Rail Travel: The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

Indian Railways is on the brink of a major transformation in long-distance travel with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set. This state-of-the-art train promises to elevate the travel experience for passengers across the country. The first 16-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set has successfully completed rigorous trials, marking a significant milestone in railway modernization. With a focus on comfort, speed, and advanced technology, these trains are set to redefine overnight journeys in India.

Successful Trials and Initial Launch

On January 15, 2025, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set completed extensive trials over a distance of 540 kilometers in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad section. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, which manufactured the first train set. The prototype underwent initial testing in the Kota division, where it successfully covered short distances of 30 to 40 kilometers at a speed of 180 km/h. Passengers experienced a comfortable journey, setting the stage for the future of rail travel in India.

The successful trials indicate that the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set is ready to meet the demands of modern travelers. With its sleek design and advanced features, it promises a seamless and luxurious travel experience. This train is not just about speed; it is about providing a comfortable and enjoyable journey for passengers. As Indian Railways continues to innovate, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set stands as a symbol of progress in the transportation sector.

Scaling Up Production: The Road Ahead

Following the successful trial of the prototype, Indian Railways plans to ramp up production. Nine additional Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets are scheduled for manufacturing between April and December 2025. These new trains will set new benchmarks in efficiency and convenience for long-haul travelers. To support this ambitious rollout, Indian Railways has placed a significant order for propulsion electrics for 50 rakes of the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets.

The order was awarded to two leading Indian manufacturers, ensuring that the production process is both efficient and timely. M/s Medha will supply propulsion systems for 33 rakes, while M/s Alstom will provide systems for 17 rakes. This collaboration between Indian manufacturers highlights the commitment to self-reliance in railway technology. Full-scale production of the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets is expected to commence in 2026-27, further solidifying India’s position in the global railway industry.

A New Chapter in Rail Travel with Speed and Luxury

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set is designed with a host of modern features that enhance passenger comfort and safety. It includes automatic doors, ultra-comfortable berths, onboard WiFi, and an aircraft-like design. With a total capacity of 1,128 passengers, the train is divided into three classes: AC 1st Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier.
