Revised GDP Series Boosts Growth Forecast for FY26 to 7.6%

India’s economy is projected to grow by an impressive 7.6% in the fiscal year 2025-26, driven primarily by advancements in the manufacturing and services sectors. This optimistic forecast comes as the National Statistics Office (NSO) released revised economic data, establishing a new base year of 2022-23. The updated figures underscore India’s resilience amid global trade tensions and geopolitical challenges, reaffirming its status as the fastest-growing major economy worldwide.

Revised Growth Estimates Reflect Economic Resilience

The NSO’s second advance estimates, unveiled on Friday, indicate that India’s economic growth for the current fiscal year has surpassed earlier projections. Initially estimated at 7.4% based on the previous 2011-12 series, the new data reveals a stronger growth trajectory. The economy expanded by 7.8% during the October-December quarter, although this was a slight decline from the revised 8.4% growth observed in the preceding July-September quarter. Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran emphasized that three consecutive years of growth exceeding 7% demonstrate the macroeconomic resilience of India, with the Economic Survey’s projections for FY27 also revised upwards to a range of 7% to 7.4%.

Structural Changes and Improved Data Accuracy

The revised data series aims to capture the structural changes within the Indian economy more effectively. According to statistics secretary Saurabh Garg, the new series incorporates enhanced estimation methodologies and a broader range of data sources, including the informal sector. This revamp is part of a broader initiative by the Centre to improve the quality of economic data. Earlier this year, the government released upgraded retail inflation data with a new base year of 2024, and plans are underway to refresh the index of industrial production data with updated sources and a new base year of 2022-23. These changes are expected to address criticisms regarding the reliability of India’s economic data.

Significant Revisions in Manufacturing Sector Performance

The updated figures reveal a notable improvement in the health of the manufacturing sector, which had previously been underestimated in the old data series. The new estimates show that manufacturing experienced a robust growth rate of 13.3% in the third quarter of FY2026, a significant increase from the 10.8% growth recorded in the same quarter the previous year. This rebound in industrial activity highlights the sector’s crucial role in driving overall economic growth. The revisions also indicate that GDP growth for 2023-24 has been adjusted to 7.2% from the previously estimated 9.2%, while the forecast for 2024-25 has been raised to 7.1% from 6.5%.

Future Outlook and Economic Stability

As India navigates through global uncertainties, the revised economic data paints a picture of stability and growth. The government’s efforts to enhance data accuracy and capture the evolving economic landscape are expected to bolster confidence among investors and policymakers alike. With a focus on manufacturing and services, India is poised to maintain its position as a leader in economic growth, setting the stage for continued progress in the coming years. The emphasis on structural changes and improved methodologies in data collection will likely contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the economy’s performance, ensuring that India remains resilient in the face of external challenges.
