Revamped Unani Centre Launched in Mumbai to Promote Integrative Healthcare

In a significant step towards promoting traditional healthcare, Union Minister of State for Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, inaugurated the upgraded Co-location Centre of the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM) in Mumbai. This fresh initiative was part of the Unani Day 2026 celebrations and the National Conference titled “Innovation and Evidence in Unani Practice” held at the historic J.J. Hospital campus.

The RRIUM Co-location Centre, originally established in 1984, has undergone enhancements costing approximately Rs. 3.84 crore. The renovations aim to elevate clinical services, research facilities, and patient care within an integrative healthcare framework. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to fuse Unani medicine with modern medical practices, ensuring patients receive comprehensive care informed by scientific research.

Commitment to Integrative Healthcare

At the inauguration, Shri Jadhav emphasized the importance of this upgraded centre, aligning with Prime Minister Modi’s vision to establish traditional medicine as a core aspect of a modern, patient-focused healthcare system. By uniting Unani and conventional medicine, the centre aspires to facilitate effective, safe, and holistic patient care.

During his address, the Minister underscored that the future of Unani medicine lies in leveraging scientific research to validate its efficacy. He urged institutions like CCRUM and RRIUM to spearhead high-quality clinical research and standardize treatments so that Unani practices can effectively address contemporary health challenges.

Innovation and Research: The Future of Unani Medicine

Shri Jadhav stressed that innovation and scientific evidence are foundational for the evolution of Unani medicine. He encouraged researchers to utilize modern technologies, including genomics and AI, to enhance the understanding of Unani practices and therapies. This forward-thinking approach aims to ensure that all Unani methods comply with international quality and safety standards.

Shri Babasaheb Patil, Minister of Co-operation for the Government of Maharashtra, lauded the establishment of the renovated co-location facility, indicating it as a pivotal move towards affordable healthcare. He shared his positive experiences with Unani treatments and highlighted the importance of traditional medicine in addressing health issues, especially in underserved populations.

Strengthening the Unani Ecosystem

Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary at the Ministry of Ayush, reflected on the remarkable progress Unani medicine has made over the past decade, especially in research and patient care. He pointed out that increased policy support and budget allocations have led to a notable rise in services offered by Unani institutions.

Dr. Maneesha V. Kothekar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Indian Systems of Medicine, celebrated the co-location facility’s inauguration, recognizing it as a vital element of India’s diverse medical heritage. She acknowledged the continual efforts to enhance infrastructure, education, and research in Unani medicine.

As part of the enhancement efforts, the Biochemistry and Pathology Laboratory at RRIUM received NABL certification to ensure high-quality standards in Unani research.
