Regional Office of Universal Postal Union (UPU) gets inaugurated in New Delhi today

State Minister for Communication Shri Devusinh Chauhan and Director General of Universal Postal Union (DG UPU) Masahiko Metoki inaugurated the UPU regional office here today. The Regional Office will undertake the UPU’s technical assistance activities in the South Asia region by entering into an agreement with the host country by the Department of Post, India.

The UPU’s regional office in India will serve as a vital platform for the exchange of ideas, experience and expertise, thereby accelerating the modernization and transformation of the postal sector. It will act as a hub to foster collaboration among UPU member countries in the Asia Pacific region, encouraging innovation and facilitating knowledge sharing to improve postal services.

India also announced a contribution of US$2,00,000 for a period of four years to the UPU’s development and technical assistance activities through the Asia Pacific Postal Union. This financial contribution aims to support capacity building, infrastructure development and other activities essential to strengthen the postal sector in the region.

The establishment of the UPU’s regional office in India is a significant step towards India’s commitment to South-South cooperation and its active role in global postal development.

It will also create opportunities for joint initiatives and capacity-building programs that will improve the quality of postal services, cross-border e-commerce and contribute to economic development and social welfare.
