RCB’s Stellar Start: Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal Lead the Charge in IPL 2026 Opener Against SRH

The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru witnessed an electrifying start to the IPL 2026 season as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) triumphed over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets. RCB’s victory was powered by a stellar performance from debutant pacer Jacob Duffy, who took three wickets for just 22 runs. The batting duo of Devdutt Padikkal and Virat Kohli also shone brightly, with Padikkal scoring 61 runs off 26 balls and Kohli finishing unbeaten on 69 off 38, leading RCB to chase down a target of 200 runs with 26 balls remaining.

RCB’s Dominant Chase

RCB’s chase began on a shaky note with Phil Salt departing early for just eight runs. However, Devdutt Padikkal quickly took charge, showcasing his skills with a rapid 61 runs. His innings included a spectacular six off Jaydev Unadkat, setting a positive tone for the chase. Padikkal’s footwork was notably improved, allowing him to find gaps and score freely. He reached his half-century with a crisp straight drive, demonstrating his confidence and form after a successful domestic season. Unfortunately, his innings ended when he attempted a big shot against Harsh Dubey, resulting in a catch at mid-off.

Virat Kohli, who was at the crease when Padikkal was dismissed, shifted gears to anchor the innings. Despite a brief wobble that saw RCB lose two wickets in quick succession, Kohli remained composed. He guided the team towards victory alongside Tim David, who contributed a quick 16 runs. Their partnership ensured RCB crossed the finish line smoothly, marking a successful start to their IPL campaign.

Duffy’s Impressive Debut

Jacob Duffy made a significant impact in his IPL debut, leading RCB’s bowling attack in the absence of Josh Hazlewood. He quickly dismantled SRH’s top order, claiming three crucial wickets. Duffy struck early, dismissing Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head within his first two overs. He continued to apply pressure, sending Nitish Reddy back to the pavilion shortly after. Duffy’s performance set the tone for RCB’s bowling strategy, allowing them to control the game from the outset.

While Duffy was wreaking havoc, SRH’s Ishan Kishan emerged as a beacon of hope for his team. Despite the early wickets, Ishan countered RCB’s attack with a powerful 80 runs off 38 balls. His innings included several boundaries and showcased his ability to shift momentum. Ishan found support from Aniket Verma, who contributed a quick 43 runs, helping SRH recover from a precarious position. Their partnership was crucial in setting a competitive total for RCB to chase.

Ishan’s Resilience

Ishan Kishan’s performance was a highlight for SRH, especially as he captained the side for the first time. After losing early wickets, he displayed remarkable composure and aggression. Ishan’s innings featured a series of explosive shots, including sixes and fours that energized the SRH innings. His partnership with Heinrich Klaasen, which yielded 97 runs for the fourth wicket, was instrumental in stabilizing the innings.

Ishan’s innings came to an end in a dramatic fashion when he attempted to clear the boundary but was caught by Phil Salt in a stunning one-handed grab. Despite his dismissal, Ishan’s knock provided SRH with a fighting total, showcasing his potential as a leader and a batsman in the IPL. His ability to perform under pressure will be a key asset for SRH as the tournament progresses.
