RCB and KSCA Unveil Memorial Plaque and Seats to Commemorate Chinnaswamy Stampede Victims
BENGALURU: June 4, 2025, marks a somber chapter in the history of Bengaluru’s sports scene, as the tragic loss of 11 lives during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s first IPL title celebrations continues to cast a long shadow. As the team prepares to defend its title at home, both the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and the franchise are taking significant steps to honor the memory of the victims, including a 14-year-old. Ahead of their season opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad, a memorial plaque will be unveiled at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, creating a lasting tribute to those who lost their lives.
Memorial Plaque and Reserved Seats
In a heartfelt initiative, the KSCA will unveil a memorial plaque near the inner entrance of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, close to an existing mural. This plaque will serve as a permanent reminder of the tragic events that unfolded during the celebrations. Additionally, the association has decided to reserve 11 seats within the stadium in memory of the victims. These seats will remain unsold for all matches, including international games, and will be located together in a premier stand, allowing for a designated area of remembrance.
Tribute on Match Day
On the day of the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru will lead a tribute to honor the victims. The names of those who lost their lives will be displayed prominently inside the stadium, followed by a minute of silence. The visiting team is also expected to participate in this moment of remembrance, ensuring that the memory of the victims is respected and honored by all present.
A Lasting Legacy
The memorial plaque is intended to be a significant point of remembrance, similar to the Hillsborough Memorial at Anfield Stadium, which honors the 97 Liverpool fans who tragically lost their lives in 1989. KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad expressed the importance of this initiative, stating, “It is painful to even think about the tragic incident. We don’t want to rekindle any pain; instead, we want to remember them.” The decision to create this memorial reflects a collective sentiment among the KSCA and the franchise to ensure that the memories of those who perished remain an integral part of the stadium’s legacy.
