Ram Madhvani and Mahaveer Jain Discuss Storytelling and Nation Building at IFFI

National Award-winning filmmaker Ram Madhvani and esteemed producer Mahaveer Jain captivated audiences at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa with a thought-provoking discussion on the influence of storytelling in nation-building. Moderated by the young producer and director Divyansh Jain, the session delved into the cultural significance of narratives and the responsibilities of filmmakers in shaping societal values. Both Madhvani and Jain emphasized the importance of sharing India’s rich cultural heritage through cinema, highlighting the emotional and moral dimensions of storytelling.

Exploring the Essence of Storytelling

During the session, Ram Madhvani articulated the profound impact that stories have on Indian civilization. He referenced ancient epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, describing them as more than mere tales; they serve as moral compasses and reflections of cultural identity. Madhvani stated, “As creators today, we inherit that legacy. Our responsibility is to craft stories that not only entertain but also carry forward the values, questions, and memories that define us.” He underscored the sacred nature of storytelling, which he believes allows individuals to better understand themselves and showcase India’s essence to the world.

Madhvani’s insights were complemented by Mahaveer Jain, who stressed the significance of disseminating India’s ancient wisdom through the medium of film. Jain remarked, “We have solutions for everything in the ancient wisdom that our own sages have given us.” He urged filmmakers to propagate this wisdom globally, asserting that it is a gift India can offer to the world. The dialogue highlighted the filmmakers’ shared vision of using cinema as a tool for cultural exchange and understanding.

The Role of Emotion in Filmmaking

Ram Madhvani also shared his unique approach to filmmaking, focusing on the emotional resonance of his narratives. He expressed a keen interest in the tragic hero, noting that contemporary cinema often overlooks this archetype. “We have the romantic, action, and comedy heroes, but the tragic hero or heroine—like Meena Kumari, Dilip Kumar, and even Shah Rukh Khan—are people who actually affected us,” he explained. Madhvani aims to evoke deep emotions in his audience, striving to create moments of catharsis through his work. He believes that if his films can help viewers confront their own struggles and find solace, he has fulfilled his purpose as a storyteller.

Madhvani also reflected on the significance of his film “Guide,” which he described as one of the greatest spiritual films in Indian cinema. He expressed a desire to create another film of similar depth and impact, emphasizing the importance of tragedy in storytelling. His commitment to exploring complex emotional landscapes sets him apart in the industry and resonates with audiences seeking meaningful narratives.

IFFI: A Platform for Cultural Exchange

The International Film Festival of India, established in 1952, stands as a premier platform for filmmakers, producers, and storytellers to converge and discuss the role of cinema in shaping culture and identity. Accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations (FIAPF), IFFI continues to celebrate landmark cinema from around the world. The festival serves as a vital space for dialogue on the responsibilities of filmmakers and the emotional impact of their work.

As the festival progresses, it remains committed to curating diverse narratives that reflect the complexities of human experience. The engaging conversation between Madhvani and Jain exemplifies the festival’s mission to foster discussions that explore the intersection of storytelling, culture, and national identity. Through such dialogues, IFFI reinforces its role in promoting cinema as a powerful medium for social change and cultural understanding.
