Rajnath Singh Inaugurates Advanced Maritime Safety and Pollution Response Facilities

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh today inaugurated the newly constructed state-of-the-art Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He also virtually launched two other significant facilities: the Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre at Chennai Port and the Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry. These establishments mark a significant leap forward in India’s commitment to maritime security, safety, and environmental protection.

The MRCC is equipped with the latest technology for monitoring and coordinating maritime rescue operations. It has advanced communication systems that enable real-time management of alerts and swift response to emergencies at sea. The center is staffed by highly-trained ICG personnel specializing in Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, ensuring rapid deployment of rescue aircraft, ships, and other resources to assist mariners and fishermen in distress.

In conjunction with this, the Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre is a pioneering facility dedicated to tackling marine pollution in the Indian Ocean Region, particularly oil and chemical spills. Spearheaded by the Coast Guard Regional Headquarters East, the center operates from Chennai Port and includes a 24×7 Emergency Response Centre. It will also serve as a training hub, imparting pollution response techniques to various organizations, including ports, oil handling agencies, and personnel from friendly nations.

Additionally, the newly established Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry will play a crucial role in reinforcing maritime security along the southern coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. This facility will house Chetak and Advanced Light Helicopter squadrons, both indigenously built, and capable of conducting maritime patrols, SAR missions, and other vital operations.

Speaking at the event, Raksha Mantri emphasized the importance of these facilities in strengthening India’s maritime capabilities. He highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring robust maritime security and swift responses to emergencies, which are essential for safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests and protecting its coastal environment.

The inauguration was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, ICG, and Armed Forces, along with dignitaries from state governments and representatives from friendly countries.
