Rail Modernisation: Railways to Introduce 260 Vande Bharat Sleeper Rakes with Enhanced Safety and Comfort Features

The Indian government is set to enhance long-distance rail travel by manufacturing 260 rakes of the Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets, as announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a recent Lok Sabha session. This initiative aims to integrate advanced safety systems and improve passenger comfort. The project will unfold in phases, starting with prototype development and progressing through testing and series production, involving collaboration among various manufacturing entities.

Phased Development and Production

The Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets will be developed through a systematic approach that includes prototype creation, extensive testing, and trials before moving into mass production. The government has emphasized that the introduction of these sleeper trains will occur in phases, tailored to meet demand and ensure operational readiness. This structured rollout is designed to guarantee that the trains meet the highest standards of safety and reliability before they enter passenger service. Advanced Safety Features

Key innovations include semi-permanent jerk-free couplers, anti-climbers, and the KAVACH safety system, which is designed to prevent collisions. Additionally, the trainsets will feature crashworthy designs that comply with European safety standards. Fire safety is also a priority, with the inclusion of fire barrier doors, aerosol-based fire detection and suppression systems, and comprehensive CCTV coverage throughout the coaches. These enhancements are part of the government’s strategy to elevate safety standards across the railway network.

Passenger Comfort Enhancements

In addition to safety improvements, the Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets will focus on passenger comfort. The trains will be equipped with centrally controlled automatic plug doors and wider, fully sealed gangways to facilitate easier movement within the coaches. The air-conditioning systems will utilize indigenously developed UV-C lamp-based disinfection technology to ensure a hygienic environment. Furthermore, special provisions for Divyangjan passengers will include dedicated lavatories in driving coaches and emergency communication systems to connect with train staff during critical situations. These features are designed to create a more enjoyable and accessible travel experience for all passengers.

Operational Efficiency and Speed

The Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets are engineered for operational efficiency, featuring regenerative braking systems that enhance energy conservation. The trains are designed to achieve a maximum speed of 180 km/h, with an operational speed of 160 km/h, allowing for faster travel times on long-distance routes. This initiative not only aims to improve the speed of rail travel but also to ensure that the services provided are reliable and efficient.
