Rabi Crop Coverage Sees Notable Progress as of January 2026

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has announced significant advancements in Rabi crop coverage as of January 9, 2026. According to the latest data, a total of 644.29 lakh hectares have been sown this season, reflecting a healthy increase compared to previous figures for the 2024-25 period. Key crops like wheat and rice have demonstrated particularly strong growth in coverage area.

Wheat and Rice Lead the Way

Wheat, one of the staple crops, has experienced a remarkable rise, with 334.17 lakh hectares planted. This figure surpasses the 328.04 lakh hectares recorded last season, marking an increase of 6.13 lakh hectares. Similarly, rice cultivation has expanded, with a corresponding area of 21.71 lakh hectares being sown, up 2.22 lakh hectares from the previous year’s coverage of 44.73 lakh hectares.

Pulses Among Other Significant Crops

Pulses, including gram, lentil, and fieldpea, have shown mixed results this season. The area for gram and lentil has risen significantly, reaching 95.88 lakh hectares and 18.12 lakh hectares, respectively. Conversely, the coverage for fieldpea has decreased slightly.

Shri Anna and Coarse Cereals Perform Well

Shri Anna and other coarse cereals have also seen a boost in area coverage, with figures reaching 55.20 lakh hectares. This represents an increase from last year’s total of 59.05 lakh hectares. Maize stands out among these crops, expanding to 25.24 lakh hectares, marking a substantial growth over previous statistics.

Oilseed Crop Expansion

In the oilseeds category, total area coverage has surged to 96.86 lakh hectares, a notable increase from last year’s figures of 93.49 lakh hectares. Rapeseed and mustard, crucial for oil production, comprise the majority of this increase with 89.36 lakh hectares planted, reflecting an ascent from last season.

Overall Agricultural Progress

Overall, the total area sown across various crops has reached 644.29 lakh hectares, which is a commendable increase of 17.65 lakh hectares compared to the previous year’s data of 626.64 lakh hectares. This positive trajectory in Rabi crop coverage indicates a promising agricultural outlook for the country in the coming months.
