R Ashwin Shares Aspirations for Life After IPL Retirement

Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), marking the end of a significant chapter in his cricketing career. The veteran off-spinner, who concluded his IPL journey with the Chennai Super Kings, expressed his desire to explore coaching as a potential next step. Ashwin, who retired from international cricket last year, shared his thoughts on his future during a recent YouTube interview, emphasizing his pursuit of joy in the game and the challenges of managing the IPL’s intensity at his age.

Transitioning to Coaching

In his recent remarks, Ashwin highlighted that coaching could be a natural progression for him following his retirement from the IPL. He stated, โ€œMy next chapter could probably be coaching,โ€ indicating that he views this transition as an important opportunity for personal growth. The 38-year-old cricketer acknowledged the difficulties of balancing the demands of the IPL with his age, which has prompted him to seek clarity in his career path. He expressed that he is now focused on pursuing joy in the game, suggesting that coaching could provide him with that fulfillment.

Discussions on Dual Roles

Reflecting on his past experiences, Ashwin mentioned that discussions about a dual role as a player and coach had taken place during his time with the Rajasthan Royals. He noted that while the idea was explored, it did not materialize. Ashwin emphasized that the IPL may not offer the flexibility for such roles, but he remains open to opportunities in other leagues where he could potentially take on coaching responsibilities. He expressed a desire to contribute to the development of players, stating, โ€œIt would be about learning, about contributing to the players in some way.โ€

Experience in Tamil Nadu Premier League

Ashwin also shared insights from his experience in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), where he has taken on a captain-cum-coach role. He noted that this experience has allowed him to learn and grow in a coaching capacity, as he worked closely with players who are not at the IPL level. This hands-on approach has provided him with valuable lessons and a deeper understanding of the game. He mentioned that interacting with new players in different environments has been beneficial for his development as a potential coach.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, Ashwin expressed a light-hearted interest in possibly coaching in international leagues, even mentioning the Italy Premier League. He conveyed enthusiasm for any opportunity that allows him to stay connected to cricket. As he wraps up his IPL career, Ashwin reflected on his journey, stating, โ€œThey say every ending has a new start.โ€ With a record of 221 matches, 187 wickets, and 833 runs in the IPL, he is ready to embrace new challenges and adventures in the world of cricket.
