Proposals Invited for PRIP Scheme Supporting Pharma-MedTech Projects Worth ₹11,000 Crore
The Department of Pharmaceuticals, Government of India, has launched a significant initiative aimed at boosting research and innovation in the Pharma-MedTech sector. The Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma-MedTech Sector (PRIP) scheme invites applications for funding projects that could transform the industry into a globally competitive and innovation-driven field. With a budget of ₹5,000 crore, the scheme aims to support approximately 300 projects, facilitating a total research and development investment of around ₹11,000 crore in areas like new medicines, complex generics, biosimilars, and novel medical devices.
Amendments to Enhance Impact
In a bid to maximize the scheme’s effectiveness, the Department of Pharmaceuticals has introduced amendments and revised guidelines. These changes are designed to better meet the needs of all stakeholders involved in the Pharma-MedTech sector. Under the new provisions, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and startups can apply for early-stage projects costing up to ₹9 crore, with potential assistance of up to ₹5 crore. For later-stage projects, the funding cap increases significantly, allowing applications for projects costing up to ₹285 crore, with assistance reaching up to ₹100 crore. The financial support structure is designed to cover 100% of costs for early-stage projects up to ₹1 crore and 50% for additional costs beyond that threshold.
Focus on Strategic Priority Innovation Areas
The amended scheme also emphasizes strengthening India’s health security framework in areas of high public health significance, identified as Strategic Priority Innovation (SPI) areas. These include rare diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and vaccine-preventable diseases. For later-stage projects in these SPI areas, the scheme offers up to 50% assistance, capped at ₹100 crore. This targeted approach aims to address critical health challenges that may have lower market potential but are vital for public health.
Collaboration and Institutional Support
To foster collaboration between industry and academia, the amended scheme provides specific incentives for MSMEs and startups to partner with reputable academic and research institutions. Up to nine projects at both early and later stages will receive preference in selection if they demonstrate significant collaborative development. Additionally, the scheme allows for the use of funds to in-license research outputs from these institutions, linking academic research strengths with industry capabilities. This initiative aims to create viable technologies and products that can be brought to market effectively.
Digital Application Process and Future Prospects
The application process for the PRIP scheme opened on October 1, 2025, through a dedicated digital portal, streamlining the submission process for applicants. Detailed guidelines, eligibility criteria, and timelines are available on the PRIP portal. By encouraging participation from both domestic and global players, the scheme aims to attract greater investment in research and development. This forward-thinking approach is expected to accelerate the delivery of affordable, high-quality healthcare solutions, ultimately positioning India as a key player in healthcare innovation on the global stage. The initiative represents a significant investment in the future of public health in India, enhancing the nation’s role in contributing to global health advancements.
