Professional Asphalt and Concrete Paving

Pavement failure is rarely about the material choice being wrong in the abstract — asphalt and concrete are both proven, widely used surfaces — it’s almost always about a mismatch between the material, the climate, and how the site was prepared underneath. Nowhere is that mismatch punished faster than in a state with a real freeze-thaw cycle.

What federal research says about freeze-thaw damage

The Federal Highway Administration’s pavement research has documented exactly why: repeated freeze-thaw cycling causes measurably increased roughness in concrete pavements over time, and temperature swings above and below freezing drive damaging expansion and contraction in the unbound layers beneath both asphalt and concrete surfaces. States in colder climates have adapted their standard construction practices accordingly — several require frost-susceptible subgrade soil to be removed and replaced to a depth of a meter or more before paving, specifically to keep frost from reaching the layers that matter most for structural stability. Alaska’s highway agency, for one, traditionally builds roadways on embankments with a minimum of a meter of select frost-free material for exactly this reason.

Asphalt versus concrete: the real trade-off

That’s the engineering context for why the asphalt-versus-concrete decision looks different in Michigan than it does in Arizona. Asphalt’s flexibility lets it expand and contract with temperature without cracking as readily, a meaningful advantage through repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and it’s generally faster and less expensive to install and repair, since damaged sections can be patched or overlaid without replacing the whole surface. Concrete’s rigidity gives it longer service life and lower routine maintenance under stable conditions, and its lighter color reflects more heat, keeping surfaces cooler in summer — but the same rigidity is part of why it’s more vulnerable to the specific roughening effect FHWA’s research documented in colder regions.

Why the ground underneath matters most

None of that removes the need for proper site work underneath either material. Asphalt concrete, the material used for most modern road and driveway surfaces, is engineered from aggregate bound together with either asphalt cement or Portland cement, and the failure modes for both — cracking, potholing, premature settling — trace back overwhelmingly to inadequate grading, drainage, or base-layer compaction rather than the surface material itself. A quality paving job follows a fairly consistent sequence regardless of material: site assessment and grading, base preparation with compacted aggregate, edge restraints to prevent spreading, and a proper curing period with restricted traffic before the surface is put into full use. Skipping any one of those steps tends to show up as a problem within the first year or two, long before the surface material itself would otherwise have failed.

The case for hiring locally

Regional experience matters more here than it does for a lot of construction trades, which is part of why hiring locally tends to pay off. A Michigan paving contractor working in a state with real winters is, by necessity, familiar with cold-climate mix formulations and frost-depth requirements that a warm-climate contractor may never have needed to learn — knowledge that shows up not in the finished surface’s first appearance, but in how it holds up several winters later.

The actual return on a quality paving job shows up years later, in whether a driveway or lot needed resurfacing after one winter or after fifteen — which is a much better way to judge a paving contractor’s work than how it looks the week it’s poured.
