Prithvi Shaw Declares His Unwavering Love for Cricket: “No One Can Take This Away from Me”

NEW DELHI: Prithvi Shaw is embracing a fresh start after a challenging period that saw him lose his spot in the IPL and the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad. With a renewed focus on mental clarity, the Delhi Capitals batter is determined to make a comeback. Shaw reflected on his time away from the game, emphasizing the importance of personal growth and hard work as he prepares for the upcoming season.

Shaw’s Mental Reset and Personal Growth

Prithvi Shaw has taken significant steps to reset his mental state after facing setbacks in his cricket career. He shared that his time away from the IPL allowed him to enjoy life outside of cricket, providing him with valuable family time and a chance to recharge. “It was just a needed break, so that I can strengthen myself mentally,” Shaw explained. He believes that this period of reflection has been beneficial, helping him reconnect with his personal life and focus on what truly matters.

Shaw’s return to cricket comes after a tough couple of seasons where he struggled to perform consistently. In the IPL 2023 and 2024 seasons, he failed to score over 200 runs, leading to his exclusion from the Delhi Capitals squad. Despite these challenges, Shaw remains optimistic about his future. He acknowledges the expectations placed on him as an opening batter but is committed to returning to the basics of practice and hard work. “You have to give your 100% during practice,” he stated, emphasizing the need for quality over quantity in his training.

Addressing External Expectations and Personal Accountability

Having been labeled a cricket prodigy from a young age, Shaw has faced immense pressure from external sources. He candidly addressed the challenges of living up to public expectations, admitting that he has made mistakes along the way. “I am a human being. I will make mistakes,” he said, highlighting the importance of self-belief and resilience. Shaw has chosen to distance himself from social media and public scrutiny, focusing instead on his own journey and the support of his close-knit circle.

The batter’s recent experiences have taught him valuable lessons about handling pressure and maintaining a positive mindset. He expressed gratitude for the support of his family and coach, Prashant Shetty, during difficult times. Shaw’s approach to life has shifted, as he now prioritizes living in the present rather than fixating on future goals. “I like to be in the present,” he remarked, indicating a newfound clarity in his outlook.

Performance and Future Aspirations

Despite the challenges he faced, Shaw’s recent performances for Maharashtra have shown promise. He scored 537 runs in seven matches, including a double century, and performed respectably in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. While his statistics may not be eye-catching, the opportunity to play regularly has been crucial for his development and confidence. Shaw believes that these experiences have positively influenced his approach to the game and life in general.

Looking ahead, Shaw remains determined to make a comeback to the Indian national team. He acknowledges the importance of setting realistic goals but prefers to focus on the present moment. “If I don’t think of a comeback, it will be wrong because I am playing for that,” he stated. As he prepares for the upcoming IPL season, Shaw is expected to open the batting alongside KL Rahul for the Delhi Capitals, who will kick off their campaign against the Lucknow Super Giants on April 1.
