President of India Visits Angola for Bilateral Meeting and Delegation-Level Talks
The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, made history by arriving in Luanda, Angola, on November 8, 2025, marking the first visit by an Indian President to the country. Accompanied by Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Railways, Shri V. Somanna, and Members of Parliament, she was warmly welcomed at the Luanda International Airport by Angola’s Minister of External Relations, Mr. Tete Antonio. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations between India and Angola, focusing on various sectors including trade, energy, and cooperation in emerging areas.
On November 9, 2025, President Murmu began her official engagements at the Presidential Palace in Luanda. She was received by President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of Angola, who extended a ceremonial welcome and guard of honour. The two leaders engaged in one-on-one meetings and delegation-level talks, where they discussed a wide range of issues pertinent to their bilateral relationship. The discussions highlighted the importance of mutual trust and respect, which form the foundation of the partnership between India and Angola. President Murmu expressed her appreciation for Angola’s developmental initiatives aimed at enhancing the welfare of its citizens.
Strengthening Economic Ties
During their discussions, both leaders acknowledged the thriving energy trade partnership between India and Angola. President Murmu emphasized Angola’s critical role in India’s energy security. They agreed on the necessity to diversify trade and investment ties, exploring new opportunities in technology, agriculture, health, defence, and infrastructure. The leaders also expressed their commitment to fostering people-to-people exchanges, which are essential for deepening cooperation. They reaffirmed their dedication to working together under the broader framework of the India–Africa Forum Summit, aiming to enhance collaboration across various sectors.
Agreements and Collaborations
As part of the visit, several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, focusing on cooperation in fisheries, aquaculture, and marine resources, as well as consular matters. President Murmu welcomed Angola’s decision to join the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) and the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), highlighting the significance of these partnerships in addressing global challenges. The signing of these agreements marks a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties and fostering collaboration in critical areas of mutual interest.
Following their discussions, both Presidents addressed the press, issuing statements that underscored the importance of their meeting and the agreements reached. Later, President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço hosted a banquet lunch in honour of President Droupadi Murmu at the Presidential Palace. This gesture further solidified the diplomatic ties between the two nations, showcasing the warmth and hospitality extended to the visiting Indian leader. The visit is expected to pave the way for enhanced cooperation and a stronger partnership between India and Angola in the years to come.
