The President of India, Smt Draupadi, attended the civic reception organized in his honor by the government of Puducherry. Today (August 7, 2023) he inaugurated the linear accelerator at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). He has also virtually inaugurated a 50-bed hospital located in Villianur.
Addressing the gathering, the President said that in Puducherry we see a fusion of different cultural streams. He said Tamil, Telugu and Malayali influences are visible along with the impact of the French. He added that the architecture, festivals and lifestyles reflect the different influences blending together in harmony.
The President said the Union Territory of Puducherry has made a distinct mark nationally and globally. She was delighted to note that in a study conducted by a reputable international agency, Puducherry ranks first in the 2022 Social Progress Index score among all states and union territories. She added that it performed very well on the parameters of personal freedom and choice, shelter, water and sanitation. She also noted that Puducherry has one of the highest literacy rates in the country and the gender ratio has been favorable to women. He said these facts show that the people of Puducherry believe in gender equality. He appreciated the people of Puducherry for their sensitive and modern approach to development and progress.
The President said Puducherry is a wonderful destination for spiritual tourism which is fast becoming a global trend and has the potential to provide a major boost to the socio-economic development of this region. He added that as tourism grows, businesses related to health tourism and ecotourism will also get a boost.
