PM Modi Predicts India Will Shape Startup Trends and Technology Over the Next Decade
NEW DELHI: On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the 10th anniversary of the Startup India initiative, urging Indian startups to pivot towards manufacturing and technology in the coming decade. He emphasized the importance of creating high-quality products and aimed for India to lead globally in startup trends and technologies. This call to action comes as the government seeks to enhance job creation and integrate homegrown companies into the global value chain, particularly in light of the growing influence of Chinese firms in the international market.
Focus on Manufacturing and Innovation
During the anniversary event, PM Modi highlighted the success of Indian startups in the digital and service sectors but stressed the need for a shift towards manufacturing. He encouraged entrepreneurs to innovate and develop solutions to existing problems, stating, “We have to make new products of the best quality in the world.” Modi’s vision for the next decade is for India to emerge as a leader in new technologies and startup trends, aiming to bolster the country’s position in the global market.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a time when advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies are rapidly evolving. He noted that countries that excel in AI innovation would gain significant strategic advantages. Modi mentioned the IndiaAI Mission, which has successfully onboarded over 38,000 GPUs to help reduce high computing costs, and emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting indigenous AI solutions developed on Indian servers.
Support for Entrepreneurs and Startups
Modi expressed confidence in the entrepreneurial spirit of Indian innovators, assuring them of continued government support. He referred to the Startup India initiative as a “revolution,” which has transformed India into the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem. The number of startups has surged from fewer than 500 in 2014 to over 200,000 today, including nearly 125 unicorns. Modi underscored the importance of risk-taking in entrepreneurship, stating, “If there is a loss, it will be mine. If there is a gain, it will benefit millions of families in my country.”
To further bolster the startup ecosystem, the government has invested Rs 25,000 crore through various schemes, including the Startup India Seed Fund and the NIDHI Seed Support Programme. Additionally, a Rs 1 lakh crore research, development, and innovation scheme has been launched to support emerging and deep-tech sectors, aiming to address capital constraints faced by startups.
Empowering Women Entrepreneurs
In his address, PM Modi also recognized the significant contributions of women entrepreneurs in the startup landscape. He noted that over 45% of startups in India have a female director or partner, highlighting the growing role of women in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Modi pointed out that India ranks as the second-largest ecosystem in the world for women-led startup funding, showcasing the progress made in promoting gender equality in entrepreneurship.
The Prime Minister’s commitment to fostering an inclusive startup environment reflects the government’s broader goals of empowering diverse voices in the business community. By supporting women entrepreneurs and encouraging innovation across sectors, the government aims to create a robust and dynamic startup ecosystem that can compete on a global scale.
