PM E-DRIVE Scheme Accelerates Electric Vehicle Adoption

The Government of India is making significant strides in promoting electric vehicles (EVs) through the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme. This initiative aims to enhance the adoption of various EV segments by offering targeted incentives to consumers, thereby lowering the upfront costs associated with electric mobility. The scheme focuses on a diverse range of vehicles including e-two wheelers, e-three wheelers, e-ambulances, and e-trucks, making it easier for buyers to make the switch to cleaner transportation options.

Under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, consumers receive substantial upfront incentives, which are later reimbursed to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) by the government. This mechanism not only benefits the buyers but also encourages manufacturers to produce more electric vehicles. Currently, the scheme supports over 2.8 million EVs across the country, with additional funding allocated for the development of 14,028 e-buses for State Transport Undertakings (STUs).

Investment in Infrastructure and Support

In a bid to further bolster the electric vehicle ecosystem, the PM E-DRIVE Scheme also facilitates the development of EV charging infrastructure and the upgrading of testing facilities. With an impressive allocation of Rs. 2,000 crore, the scheme aims to set up public charging stations for EVs across India. This initiative is crucial for enhancing consumer confidence and encouraging a broader acceptance of electric mobility solutions.

As of December 31, 2025, the government has reimbursed a total of Rs. 1,703 crore to OEMs for the demand incentives provided to buyers of e-two wheelers and e-three wheelers under the scheme. This financial support plays a pivotal role in making electric vehicles more accessible to the average consumer.
