Piyush Goyal Engages with Kuwait, UAE, and GCC to Revive Trade and Energy Supply Chains Amid Export Disruptions
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal engaged in critical discussions with his counterparts from Kuwait and the UAE, as well as the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), to address the ongoing disruptions in energy supplies and trade flows due to the escalating crisis in West Asia. Discussions with Kuwaiti Officials
In a virtual meeting with Kuwaiti Minister Osama Khaled Boodai, Goyal expressed India’s commitment to support Kuwait in overcoming supply chain challenges. The two ministers acknowledged the importance of prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy to restore energy supplies and trade flows as swiftly as possible. The discussions highlighted the urgency of collaborative efforts to mitigate the impact of the ongoing conflict on regional trade dynamics. In a separate bilateral meeting with Jasem Mohamed Al Budaiwi, the GCC Secretary General, Goyal expressed optimism regarding the recently announced ceasefire in the region. Goyal reiterated the strong people-to-people connections between India and GCC nations, which form the foundation of their economic and commercial ties. Impact of the Ongoing Conflict
The recent military actions in West Asia have resulted in significant disruptions to maritime shipping routes, particularly affecting trade with Gulf nations. This conflict poses considerable challenges for Indian exporters, who are struggling to ship goods to a region that accounted for a bilateral trade of $178 billion in 2024-25. Major sectors facing stress include petroleum products, chemicals, engineering goods, rice, pharmaceuticals, and gems and jewellery. The discussions led by Goyal aim to address these challenges and restore stability to trade flows, ensuring that both India and its Gulf partners can navigate the current crisis effectively.
