Phule’s Release Delayed Amid Censorship Controversy
The highly anticipated biographical film Phule, which chronicles the lives of social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, has faced a significant setback as its release has been postponed. Anurag Kashyap’s Sharp Critique
Director Anurag Kashyap, known for his candid opinions, was quick to voice his discontent regarding the film’s censorship. He took to Instagram to share a story highlighting the news of Phule‘s delay, sarcastically stating in Hindi: “Bhai India mein caste to exist hi nahin karti. Dhadak 2 mein bhi yahi bolta tha. Hamare leaders ne India mein caste system khatam kar diya hai. Baaki jinko nahin dikhta, woh chu**** hain.” This comment underscores the absurdity of denying the existence of caste in contemporary Indian society, a narrative often perpetuated in mainstream cinema and political discourse.
Phule aims to shed light on the groundbreaking efforts of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, who were instrumental in combating caste-based discrimination and championing education and social reform. The CBFC’s reported objections to caste-related themes are seen as an attempt to dilute the film’s essential message. Originally slated for release on April 11, the film’s premiere has now been rescheduled for April 25 due to these controversies, particularly following objections from the Brahmin community.
Dhadak 2 Faces Certification Challenges
In a related development, the film Dhadak 2 is also encountering hurdles in securing certification from the CBFC. Reports indicate that the film, which addresses caste issues, has garnered praise from the Examining Committee (EC) for its bold narrative. However, the committee is currently deliberating on the appropriate rating and potential cuts due to the sensitive nature of its content. A source familiar with the situation noted, “Dhadak 2 deals with caste issues and is supposed to be a shocking tale.” The ongoing discussions reflect the complexities filmmakers face when tackling such critical social themes.
