OpenAI Raises GPT-5 Usage Cap Following User Feedback, But With Conditions

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, announced on Sunday that the company will temporarily increase the rate limits for reasoning models available to all users. This decision comes as a response to a significant rise in user engagement with these capabilities. However, Altman hinted that users on the free tier may face some limitations in other features as the company navigates this capacity trade-off. The adjustments reflect OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing user experience while managing operational costs.

Enhanced Access for ChatGPT Users

In a recent update shared on X (formerly Twitter), Altman revealed that all ChatGPT users will benefit from higher rate limits for reasoning models. He noted that the limits for all model classes would soon surpass previous levels established before the launch of GPT-5. This announcement follows user feedback that prompted OpenAI to reinstate the GPT-4o model after its initial retirement. Many users expressed dissatisfaction with the conversational quality of the newer models, describing them as shorter and less engaging compared to their predecessors.

Currently, users on the free tier have access only to the GPT-5 Thinking model, which is integrated into the standard AI framework. In contrast, paid subscribers can select a separate Thinking model from the model picker. The GPT-4o model, which is part of the o-series, also possesses reasoning capabilities, further enhancing the options available to users.

Operational Challenges Ahead

While the increase in rate limits aims to improve user experience, it poses financial challenges for OpenAI. The company is already grappling with high operational costs and running at a loss. Altman acknowledged that managing the increased rate limits would require careful planning and may lead to some “capacity trade-offs.” He assured users that further details on how the company intends to address these challenges will be shared in the coming days.

The decision to raise rate limits is backed by data indicating a surge in user engagement with reasoning models. Altman shared statistics showing that the percentage of free users utilizing these models has risen from one percent to seven percent. For Plus subscribers, the increase is even more pronounced, jumping from seven percent to 24 percent. This trend underscores the growing demand for advanced reasoning capabilities among ChatGPT users.

Future Expectations for Reasoning Models

Altman expressed optimism about the future use of reasoning models, predicting a significant increase in engagement over time. He emphasized the importance of raising rate limits to accommodate this anticipated growth. As OpenAI continues to refine its offerings, the company remains focused on balancing user needs with operational sustainability.

The adjustments to the reasoning models reflect OpenAI’s responsiveness to user feedback and its commitment to enhancing the overall experience. As the company navigates these changes, users can expect ongoing updates regarding the features and capabilities available to them. The landscape of AI continues to evolve, and OpenAI is poised to adapt to the shifting demands of its user base.
