Oil Prices Surge: Impact on Petrol and Diesel Rates in India as Crude Approaches $80 Amid Middle East Tensions

International oil prices have surged by approximately 9-10% due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly following military actions involving Israel and the United States against Iran. As Brent crude approaches $80 per barrel and US crude futures rise to $72.79, concerns grow over the potential impact on fuel prices in India. The country, which relies heavily on imports to meet about 88% of its crude oil needs, may face increased import costs and inflationary pressures. However, experts suggest that retail petrol and diesel prices in India are unlikely to change in the immediate future.

Impact of Rising Oil Prices on India

Despite the recent spike in global oil prices, reports indicate that India will not see an immediate increase in retail petrol and diesel prices. The government is adopting a cautious approach, allowing oil marketing companies to enhance their margins during periods of lower international prices while simultaneously protecting consumers when global rates rise. Since April 2022, fuel prices at the pump have remained stable, with state-run retailers absorbing losses during times of high crude prices and benefiting when prices fell. This strategy has helped maintain consistent domestic fuel prices, even as international rates fluctuated.

Sources suggest that the government plans to continue this policy of shielding consumers unless there is a significant surge in crude prices. With upcoming assembly elections in key states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Assam, the government is particularly motivated to avoid any developments that could provide political leverage to opposition parties.

Assessing Oil Security Amidst Middle East Tensions

In light of the escalating conflict in the Middle East, India’s Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri convened a meeting with senior officials and executives from public sector oil companies to evaluate the current situation regarding crude oil, LPG, and petroleum products. A significant portion of India’s crude oil and gas supplies transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route that Iranian authorities have threatened to close in response to US and Israeli military actions.

Industry sources indicate that Indian oil companies have sufficient buffers to manage potential price spikes, recalling that crude prices reached $119 per barrel in June 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While profits were modest during that period, the fiscal year 2024 saw record profits of Rs 81,000 crore for these companies. However, if disruptions persist, cargoes may need to be rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope, leading to longer transit times and increased transportation costs, including freight and insurance.

The Strait of Hormuz: A Critical Energy Passage

The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for global energy transportation, with nearly one-third of the world’s seaborne crude oil exports and about 20% of liquefied natural gas shipments passing through this narrow channel. The ongoing hostilities in the region have effectively shut down this vital artery, raising concerns about the stability of global oil supplies. Should the situation deteriorate further, the implications for energy prices and availability could be significant, affecting not only India but also other nations reliant on Middle Eastern oil.

As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, the Indian government remains vigilant in monitoring developments that could impact its energy security and economic stability. The focus remains on balancing consumer protection with the realities of a volatile global oil market.
