Oil Prices Approach $100 per Barrel Amid Iran’s Attacks on US Targets in Jordan
Oil prices surged closer to the $100-per-barrel mark on Wednesday, marking a fourth consecutive session of increases. Brent crude rose by 1.47% to reach $99.36 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate climbed 1.54% to $94.46. The rise in prices is attributed to renewed tensions between the US and Iran, which have unsettled the crude market.
Escalating Conflict
The latest escalation in the conflict saw Iran launching missiles at US targets in Jordan. This action followed the US military’s destruction of five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday, a response to previous attacks on US warships. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed to have targeted two US destroyers and a US base in Jordan’s Al Azraq with ballistic missiles. Jordan’s air-defense systems intercepted 18 of the 20 missiles fired from Iranian territory, with the remaining two landing in unpopulated areas.
The ongoing hostilities have diminished hopes for a permanent resolution to the six-month-long war. Since early August, Brent crude prices have increased by a quarter. The renewed attacks have pushed both sides closer to open conflict, further intensifying the economic pressures stemming from the war.
US Response
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the US would continue to target Iranian oil tankers if Tehran persisted in its attacks on US naval vessels. “Iran continues to try to hit US naval ships, and for every time they do that or try to do that, they’re going to lose tankers,” Rubio remarked during a visit to Colombia.
In addition to military actions, the US has intensified economic measures against Iran. On Tuesday, new sanctions were imposed on various sectors of Iran’s aviation industry, affecting over two dozen commercial and private airlines, as well as foreign cargo service providers. These actions are part of President Donald Trump’s strategy to end the war while isolating Tehran from its trading partners.
Strategic Waterway
The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point of the tensions, with nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil passing through this vital waterway before the onset of the war. Both the US and Iran are vying for control over this strategic passage. The ongoing conflict and rising energy prices present political challenges for Trump and the Republican Party as the November midterm elections approach. Despite the volatility, oil prices have not yet reached the $126-per-barrel level seen earlier in the conflict.
