O.P. Jindal University Launches New Programs to Enhance Democracy
In a significant event at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla took to the stage as the Chief Guest to inaugurate three innovative academic programmes at O.P. Jindal Global University. The Speaker highlighted the critical role of universities, emphasizing that they serve as key foundation stones for nation-building and civic engagement.
During his address, Shri Birla articulated that universities should transcend their traditional roles of merely granting degrees. Instead, they should instill constitutional values and civic awareness in the nation’s youth, fostering a generation that embodies the principle of ‘Nation First’. He commended O.P. Jindal University’s new programmes for aligning with contemporary societal needs, viewing these courses as a visionary step towards bolstering democratic institutions and frameworks.
The Lok Sabha Speaker expressed confidence that the new academic offerings would not only impart theoretical knowledge but also provide practical insights and leadership skills necessary for active participation in democracy. He underscored that a resilient democracy flourishes when citizens are aware of their rights and responsibilities, which is crucial for upholding constitutional values.
Shri Birla specifically noted the importance of courses like Political Communication, Election Management, and Legislative Drafting, outlining their relevance in shaping effective democratic processes. He anticipates that students who engage with these subjects will be pivotal in enhancing public involvement in elections.
The Speaker also recognized India’s electoral process for its integrity and transparency, urging the youth to delve deeper into studying the country’s electoral systems. He encouraged them to contribute to strengthening these frameworks further. According to him, for democratic institutions to function efficiently, public representatives and parliamentary officials need thorough training and sensitivity to the nuances of governance.
Shri Birla praised the PRIDE Institute of the Indian Parliament for its significant contributions to training parliamentary officials from over 110 countries, thereby reinforcing India’s parliamentary expertise on the global stage. He pointed out the complexities inherent in managing elections in a diverse democracy like India, highlighting the necessity for rigorous analysis and impartiality in this scientific process.
