No Immediate Effects on India’s Oil Supplies and Prices

New Delhi is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Venezuela, but experts indicate that recent developments are unlikely to have an immediate effect on India’s oil supplies or prices. The ongoing U.S. sanctions have significantly limited Venezuelan crude’s presence in global markets, including India. While the bilateral engagement between India and Venezuela has diminished, analysts suggest that if Venezuelan oil re-enters the market, India could explore diversified sourcing options, which may influence emerging market currencies.

Impact of U.S. Sanctions on Venezuelan Oil Supply

The U.S.-led sanctions against Venezuela have drastically reduced the flow of oil into global markets. In the past year, Venezuela ranked as the 18th largest source of crude oil for India, but its position has slipped to 21st place this year. From April to October, India’s imports from Venezuela totaled just over $300 million. Government officials have stated that they are not overly concerned about future developments, emphasizing that there is currently no immediate impact on oil supply. An official remarked, “We don’t know how things play out but there is no immediate impact on our supply.”

Experts echo this sentiment, noting that the current situation in Venezuela is unlikely to have a significant economic or energy impact on India. Ajay Srivastava, founder of the think tank GTRI, pointed out that while India was a major buyer of Venezuelan crude in the past, the relationship has weakened since 2019 due to sanctions. This has forced India to reduce its oil imports and limit commercial activities to avoid potential secondary sanctions.

Potential Market Sentiment and Currency Volatility

Despite the limited direct impact on oil supplies, the situation in Venezuela could still affect market sentiment and lead to volatility in emerging market currencies, including the Indian rupee. Gaura Sengupta, chief economist at IDFC First Bank, explained that while Venezuela’s oil has been largely absent from the global supply chain, its developments could still influence market perceptions. She noted that India’s current account deficit remains low this fiscal year, but the situation in Venezuela is another significant event following high U.S. tariffs.

Sengupta added that there is currently no observable impact on retail fuel inflation. However, she emphasized that if Venezuelan oil becomes available again, Indian oil companies should seize the opportunity to diversify their sources. This could potentially stabilize the market and mitigate any adverse effects on the rupee and other emerging market currencies.

Venezuela’s Oil Production Challenges

Venezuela is known to possess the world’s largest oil reserves, accounting for approximately 17% of global reserves. However, its oil production has significantly declined over the years. Last year, Venezuela was the 20th largest producer of crude oil, with output dropping from a peak of around 2 million barrels per day to approximately 1 million barrels per day, representing about 1% of global production. According to data from the Energy Institute, production fell by 10% between 2014 and 2024.

To reverse this trend and increase production, Venezuela would require substantial investments in its oil infrastructure. The current low levels of investment have hindered the country’s ability to boost output. Experts believe that any significant increase in production capacity will depend on the resolution of political and economic challenges within Venezuela, as well as the lifting of sanctions that have stifled its oil industry.

Looking Ahead: India’s Oil Strategy

As the situation in Venezuela continues to unfold, India remains cautious but optimistic about potential changes in the global oil landscape. The country has been actively seeking to diversify its oil sources to reduce dependency on any single supplier. With the possibility of Venezuelan oil re-entering the market, Indian officials and industry experts are considering strategies to capitalize on this opportunity.

While the immediate impact of developments in Venezuela may be minimal, the long-term implications could reshape India’s oil procurement strategies. By exploring new sources and enhancing its energy security, India aims to navigate the complexities of the global oil market while remaining resilient amid geopolitical uncertainties.
