No Fuel Shortage: Government Guarantees Full Domestic Supply of LPG, PNG, and CNG Amid Hormuz Energy Crisis
Amid rising geopolitical tensions affecting global oil supplies, the Indian government is taking proactive measures to ensure a steady availability of fuel across the nation. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has reassured citizens that there is no disruption in the supply of household LPG, with over 53.5 lakh cylinders delivered recently. Authorities are closely monitoring maritime safety in the Middle East and have urged the public to refrain from panic buying fuel, emphasizing that the government is committed to maintaining adequate supplies of petrol, diesel, and LPG.
Government Reassures Public on Fuel Supply
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has confirmed that domestic LPG cylinder deliveries are proceeding as normal, with significant quantities being distributed daily. The ministry reported that more than 53.5 lakh domestic LPG cylinders were delivered yesterday, indicating a stable supply chain for household fuel needs. In light of the current geopolitical climate, the government has urged citizens to avoid rushing to fuel stations or stockpiling supplies. The ministry stated, “Citizens are advised to avoid panic purchase of petrol, diesel, and LPG as the Government is making all efforts to ensure availability.” This reassurance aims to mitigate any potential anxiety among the public regarding fuel availability.
Additionally, the ministry highlighted that essential services are fully supported, with 100% supply being maintained for Domestic LPG, Domestic PNG, and CNG for transport. Supply management measures are being implemented as necessary to ensure that all sectors receive the fuel they require. The government is actively monitoring consumer behavior in the energy sector, noting a shift towards piped natural gas, as evidenced by over 39,000 PNG consumers surrendering their LPG connections.
Maritime Safety and Shipping Operations
On the maritime front, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has confirmed that Indian shipping operations are continuing safely despite the heightened risks in the region. The Indian-flagged crude oil tanker Desh Garima successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz on April 18, 2026, carrying 31 Indian seafarers. The vessel is expected to arrive in Mumbai on April 22, 2026. However, the ministry acknowledged recent security incidents, including reports of firing involving two Indian vessels while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Fortunately, no injuries to crew members have been reported.
The shipping ministry is closely monitoring the situation and has assured that all Indian seafarers are safe. Authorities are tracking developments in the region to ensure the safety of maritime operations. The government remains committed to safeguarding the interests of Indian shipping and ensuring that vessels can operate without undue risk.
Fuel Availability and Price Management
The petroleum ministry has also provided updates on fuel availability, stating that refineries are operating at strong capacity. Sufficient stocks of petrol and diesel are being maintained, and retail fuel stations across the country are functioning normally. In response to the recent spike in crude oil prices due to the Middle East crisis, the government has taken fiscal measures to cushion consumers from potential price shocks. This includes a reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 10 per litre.
To combat malpractice in the supply chain, the government has intensified its efforts against hoarding and black marketing of LPG. On April 18, more than 2,400 raids were conducted nationwide to ensure compliance with regulations. Officials have emphasized that coordinated efforts with state governments, industry stakeholders, and relevant agencies are ongoing to maintain energy security and uninterrupted fuel supplies, despite the uncertainties in the global market.
Consumer Behavior and Energy Transition
The government has observed notable changes in consumer behavior within the energy sector. A significant number of consumers are transitioning from LPG to piped natural gas, with over 39,000 connections surrendered through the MYPNGD.in platform. This shift indicates a growing preference for more sustainable energy sources. Additionally, there has been an increase in demand for auto fuels, with the average sale of Auto LPG by public sector oil marketing companies rising significantly in April compared to previous months.
As the government continues to monitor these trends, it remains focused on ensuring that energy needs are met efficiently and sustainably.
