NMCG Advances Ganga Conservation Efforts in Recent Meeting
The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) convened its 68th Executive Committee meeting to advance efforts for maintaining a clean and unpolluted flow of the Ganga and its tributaries. Chaired by Shri Rajeev Kumar Mittal, Director General of NMCG, the meeting brought together senior officials from various ministries to discuss critical ecological initiatives, infrastructure projects, and biodiversity conservation strategies essential for the river’s health.
New Initiatives for Biodiversity Protection
A highlight of the meeting was the approval of a groundbreaking project aimed at safeguarding endangered bird species within the Ganga basin. This initiative will specifically protect the breeding habitats of sandbar-nesting birds, including the Indian Skimmer. Aligned with the Namami Gange Mission–II, this project emphasizes long-term monitoring, community engagement, and evidence-based conservation practices. Nest monitoring efforts will take place in pivotal locations such as Chambal, Lower Ganga, Bijnor, Narora, and Prayagraj. Local communities will be trained to minimize human disturbances and enhance awareness regarding these sensitive habitats.
Enhancing River Infrastructure
During the session, the Executive Committee approved revised administrative and expenditure plans to enhance the execution of ongoing projects in Ganga basin states. These approvals are set to address various implementation hurdles and ensure efficient resource allocation. Among the key projects highlighted are a Faecal Sludge and Septage Treatment Plant in Mirzapur, infrastructure upgrades in Kanpur, and initiatives focused on maintaining Ganga’s cleanliness in Varanasi through a trash skimmer project. Other important projects include sewage interception and STP initiatives in Danapur, Phulwari Sharif, and Fatuha in Bihar, as well as additional pollution abatement efforts in West Bengal and Jharkhand.
Innovative Pollution Abatement Methods
In a move towards sustainable solutions, the Executive Committee approved Nature-based Solutions for the in-situ treatment and rejuvenation of select drains in Delhi, identifying an eco-friendly method to treat sewage before it enters the Yamuna River. By utilizing rock filters, stone masonry, and aquatic plants, this initiative showcases how natural methods can effectively combat pollution.
Preserving Cultural Heritage
Additionally, the meeting focused on cultural aspects, approving a comprehensive master plan intended to restore the cultural identity and natural sanctity of the Gomti River’s origin in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh. This plan aims to enhance infrastructure while rejuvenating water sources and creating inviting spaces for spiritual activities, further cementing the cultural connections to the river.
The decisions made during this meeting display NMCG’s commitment to fostering biodiversity, promoting sustainable practices, and facilitating crucial projects for Ganga’s rejuvenation.
