Nintendo Switch 2 Achieves Milestone with 3.5 Million Units Sold

Nintendo has made headlines with the launch of its latest console, the Nintendo Switch 2, which has achieved remarkable success by selling over 3.5 million units within just four days of its release on June 5. This impressive figure marks the fastest sales record for any Nintendo game system to date, despite the console’s higher price point and the absence of major titles at launch. The new hybrid console boasts a larger screen, enhanced power, redesigned Joy-Con 2 controllers, and innovative social features, capturing the attention of gamers worldwide.

Nintendo Switch 2 Sets Sales Record

Nintendo announced the impressive sales milestone in a post on X, highlighting the overwhelming demand for the Switch 2. To put this achievement into perspective, Sony’s PS5 sold over three million units in its first four weeks after launch. The anticipation for Nintendo’s next console had been building for nearly nine years since the original Switch was released. On launch day, eager fans lined up at retail stores across the United States, Japan, and other regions, waiting for midnight to get their hands on the new device.

Doug Bowser, President and COO of Nintendo of America, expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic response from fans. He noted that the Switch 2 offers an upgraded gaming experience, allowing players to enjoy their favorite games both at home and on the go. Bowser emphasized the joy that players are experiencing as they explore the new features and games that foster connections among friends and family.

Nintendo Expects to Sell 15 Million Switch 2 Units in FY 2026

During a financial earnings call in May, Nintendo projected that it would sell 15 million units of the Switch 2 in the fiscal year 2026, a figure that some industry analysts deemed conservative given the current demand. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa explained that this sales target was based on the performance of the original Switch during its first ten months after its launch in March 2017. He also acknowledged that the higher price of the new console could pose challenges for early adopters.

Despite these concerns, the swift sales of the Switch 2 suggest that early adoption may not be as significant an issue as anticipated. The console is priced at $449.99 (approximately Rs. 38,600), with a bundle option that includes Mario Kart World available for $499.99 (around Rs. 42,900).

Features and Specifications of the Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch 2 introduces several enhancements over its predecessor, including a larger 7.9-inch LCD touchscreen that supports a resolution of 1920×1080, HDR10, and variable refresh rates of up to 120Hz. When connected to a compatible television, the console can output video at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, providing an immersive gaming experience.

In addition to its impressive display, the Switch 2 is powered by a custom Nvidia processor, enabling it to run graphically intensive games such as Cyberpunk 2, Split Fiction, and Hogwarts Legacy. The redesigned Joy-Con controllers now feature mouse functionality and attach magnetically to the console, enhancing the overall user experience. With these advancements, the Nintendo Switch 2 is poised to redefine portable gaming and attract a new generation of players.
