NHRC Investigates Maternal Deaths in Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi District
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has reacted to alarming reports concerning the deaths of 53 expectant mothers in the Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh. This tragic outcome, reported over a year from April 2025 to March 2026, is largely attributed to inadequate awareness and insufficient medical facilities. Sidhi district has repeatedly ranked among the lowest in maternal health standards according to the State Health Department.
The Commission has taken _suo motu_ cognizance of the situation, noting that if the claims in the media report are accurate, they indicate a grave violation of human rights. Consequently, it has formally requested a detailed report from the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh, expected within two weeks.
The media report, published on May 29, 2026, revealed that the average age of the deceased mothers was just 26 years, with many being first or second-time mothers. In addition to these tragic deaths, the report highlighted a critical lack of basic medical infrastructure. Community Health Centres, Primary Health Centres, and even the District Hospital are reported to be plagued by a shortage of doctors and technical specialists. This dire situation often forces patients to seek higher medical care in the distant Rewa District, creating perilous travel conditions.
One ambulance driver highlighted the severe challenges faced by pregnant women in Sidhi District. Many villages are lacking proper road access, which becomes increasingly troublesome during the monsoon season. Expectant mothers often have to be transported on cots for two to three kilometers just to reach an ambulance, putting their lives in jeopardy before they even arrive at a medical facility.
The NHRC’s involvement underscores the urgent need for systemic change to prevent such avoidable tragedies in the future. The rights body has taken a critical stance on the matter, aiming to address the underlying issues contributing to this public health crisis. Stakeholders are urged to recognize the importance of improving maternal health care in underprivileged regions to ensure the safety and well-being of mothers and their newborns.
