NHRC Internship Program Empowers 71 Students in Human Rights Awareness
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India celebrated the successful conclusion of its second Online Short Term Internship Programme (OSTI) of 2026 today. A total of 71 university-level students, chosen from a competitive pool of 1,147 applicants across 17 states and Union Territories, took part in this enriching initiative aimed at fostering human rights awareness among the youth. Notably, the group comprised 54 girls and 17 boys, reflecting a strong female representation.
Empathy and Enlightenment Take Center Stage
In a moving valedictory address, NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian emphasized the importance of empathy in understanding human rights. He likened completing the internship to Neil Armstrong’s historic moon landing, stating that if interns feel a sense of accomplishment, then the program’s mission has been realized. He referred to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, expressing that while it proclaims equality, reality often tells a different story.
Investing in Future Model Citizens
Justice Ramasubramanian shared wisdom from Tamil sage Thiruvalluvar, stating that true learning should evoke compassion towards the suffering of others. He urged the interns to recognize their individual roles in the promotion and protection of human rights, reinforcing that civil responsibility goes beyond governmental actions.
Personal Responsibility in Human Rights Promotion
Speaking ahead of him, NHRC Secretary General, Shri Bharat Lal, congratulated the participants and urged them to internalize the lessons learned during the internship. He highlighted the plight of vulnerable populations, such as those experiencing beggary or living with disabilities, and encouraged students to take small, meaningful actions toward improving their lives and ensuring dignity for all.
Experiential Learning and Engagement
Smt. Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak, NHRC Joint Secretary, presented the internship report and noted that participants engaged in various interactive sessions featuring eminent speakers from diverse fields. The program included competitions in book reviews, group research projects, and declamations, enabling students to showcase their understanding of human rights.
Expanding Horizons through Online Platforms
This initiative signifies NHRC’s commitment to reaching students in remote or underserved areas, ensuring that the opportunity for learning about human rights is not limited by geographical barriers. Throughout the 2025-26 period, NHRC successfully organized six online and two in-person internship programs, allowing students to connect with experts and advocates for human rights.
