NHRC Honors Winners of Human Rights Short Film Competition 2025

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) celebrated the creativity and impact of filmmakers at an award ceremony held today in New Delhi. Seven outstanding entries from the NHRC’s Human Rights Short Film Competition 2025 were recognized for their powerful storytelling and commitment to raising awareness on critical social issues. NHRC Chairperson, Justice V. Ramasubramanian, commended the winners for their dedication to the craft and the importance of audio-visual content in conveying messages that resonate deeply with audiences.

A Triumph for Diverse Voices

Justice Ramasubramanian noted the impressive participation this year, with entries submitted in 24 different Indian languages, reflecting the nation’s rich diversity. He expressed hope that as the competition grows, more individuals will leverage creative platforms to spotlight human rights issues. “Each year, we witness an increase in participation, demonstrating a rising public engagement with human rights concerns,” he remarked.

Films that Inspire Change

NHRC Member, Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, highlighted the distinct and vital messages delivered by the seven winning films. He particularly praised the documentary “The Dusk of Life” and the short film “Rani” for their sensitive portrayals of marginalized communities. Similarly, NHRC Member, Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, emphasized the transformative power of filmmaking, stating that films challenge stereotypes, dismantle societal barriers, and stimulate advocacy for change. She encouraged young filmmakers to harness this medium responsibly to spread awareness about human rights.

Record Participation and Growth

During the ceremony, Secretary General, Shri Bharat Lal, provided insights into the growing popularity of the competition. In just one year, the number of entries surged from 303 in 2024 to a remarkable 526 in 2025, with 438 qualifying for a thorough three-stage jury evaluation. He noted that the competition has evolved into a key initiative for promoting human rights across the country.

Celebrating the Winners

The winners were announced by Joint Secretary, Smt. Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak. The top honor, carrying a prize of Rs 2 lakh, went to “Rani” by Ms. Sarika Jain, which explores the harsh realities of class divisions faced by women domestic workers. The second prize of Rs 1.5 lakh was awarded to “Meanwhile She..” by Shri Amal S., highlighting the struggles of working women against gender stereotypes. The third prize of Rs 1 lakh was presented to “The Delivery” by Sai Shashank Tati, shedding light on the challenges encountered by gig workers.

Special Mentions for Insightful Themes

Additionally, four films received Special Mentions, each accompanied by a cash award of Rs 50,000. These included “Malati” by Falguni Bhakta, “Second Chance” by Ravi Karnwal, “Dusk of Life” by Damodar D. Pawar, and “Bhagyashree” by Manoj AppasoJanwekar. These films explored a range of themes, from tribal education and prison reforms to the resilience of the elderly and the rights of widows in rural India.

Showcasing Talent and Impact

The award-winning filmmakers had the opportunity to share their creative journeys during the event. All selected films will be showcased on the NHRC’s website and made available to government bodies, academic institutions, and civil society organizations, serving as vital tools for promoting awareness of human rights.
