NHAI Unveils AI-Driven Dashcam System for Highway Safety

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to revolutionize the management of the national highway network with the launch of sophisticated AI-powered Dashcam Analytics Services (DAS). This groundbreaking initiative will cover approximately 40,000 kilometers of India’s national highways, utilizing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies to improve operations and maintenance (O&M) across the country’s expressways.

The primary goal of this project is to enhance remote monitoring and assessment of road conditions through high-resolution imagery and video data. Specialized dashboard cameras will be installed on Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs) to conduct weekly comprehensive surveys of all highway stretches. AI and ML models will automatically identify over 30 different types of defects and anomalies.

Focus on Safety and Road Conditions

A significant emphasis will be placed on pavement conditions, which includes detecting potholes, rutting, and severe cracking. The method will also address road furniture, with real-time identification of damaged or faded lane markings, crash barriers, and inoperative streetlights. Additionally, the system will monitor safety and encroachments by tracking illegal median openings, unauthorized signboards, and improper parking.

To further bolster road safety, at least one nighttime survey will be conducted each month. This will assess the performance of road signage, pavement markings, road studs, and highway lighting. Other urgent maintenance concerns such as water stagnation, missing drainage covers, vegetation overgrowth, and the condition of bus bays will also be included in the assessments.

Strategic Data Monitoring and Management

NHAI has established five zones across the country for effective monitoring and data collection. A specialized IT platform will be developed to include dedicated modules for data management, AI analytics, and interactive visualization dashboards. This technology will facilitate side-by-side comparisons of road conditions over time, allowing NHAI to accurately track maintenance progress and address repairs promptly. The findings generated by AI will be integrated into a central NHAI Data Lake platform, ensuring seamless monitoring and timely rectification of identified defects.
