NHAI Partners with National Test House to Boost Highway Quality Control

In a groundbreaking move to enhance the quality assurance and control mechanisms for National Highway projects, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has partnered with the National Test House (NTH), a leading testing and quality assurance institution under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Shri Vipensh Sharma, Member (Projects) at NHAI, and Dr. Alok Kumar Srivastava, Director General of NTH, with esteemed participants including Shri Santosh Kumar Yadav, Chairman of NHAI, and Shri Bharat Khera, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, alongside senior officials from both organizations in New Delhi.

Enhancing Quality Standards in Highway Projects

This collaboration is set to significantly boost the quality assurance framework for National Highway initiatives by ensuring independent, third-party testing of construction materials and systems. The MoU aims to uphold stringent compliance with national standards and specifications, critical for the success of highway infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities of the National Test House

Under the agreement, the NTH will oversee the testing and certification of materials and products utilized in the development of National Highways. This process will follow guidelines established by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), comply with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) codes, and meet relevant international benchmarks. Such rigorous testing will guarantee uniformity, promote standardization across projects, and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.

Technical Support and Capacity Building

Furthermore, the collaboration will enable the NTH to offer technical support to various operational levels within the NHAI, including Headquarters, Regional Offices, and Project Implementation Units. This support includes expert advice during complex project phases, ensuring high standards of performance and reliability in critical infrastructure components, particularly in roadway lighting systems.

Commitment to Safety and Sustainability

Reflecting NHAI’s ongoing dedication to road safety and sustainability, the partnership emphasizes performance, reliability, and energy efficiency in highway construction. NHAI aims to leverage this collaboration to enhance the safety and environmental viability of its infrastructure projects.

Training and Knowledge Sharing

The MoU also seeks to foster institutional collaboration through capacity building and knowledge sharing. This will include training programs aimed at NHAI officials and relevant stakeholders, along with the dissemination of best practices in material testing, quality assurance, and overall infrastructure management.

By collaborating with a recognized institution like the National Test House, NHAI is enhancing transparency and accountability within its projects. This agreement marks a critical step forward in maintaining the highest quality standards for national highway development, ensuring that India’s roadways are safe, reliable, and built to last.
