NHAI Launches Innovative Internship Program for Engineering Students
In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at developing future professionals, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has teamed up with the Department of Higher Education, Government of India, to unveil the ‘NHAI Internship Program’. This effort offers aspiring professionals a unique opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in the nation’s largest National Highway development framework. The program was officially inaugurated by Shri Vineet Joshi, Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, alongside Shri Santosh Kumar Yadav, Chairman of NHAI, and featured senior officials from NHAI, the Ministry of Education, and AICTE.
Internship Portal Enhances Accessibility
To ensure easy access and transparency, NHAI has created a dedicated Internship Portal. This platform will serve as a comprehensive resource for internship opportunities spanning over 150 significant National Highway projects across the country. Each project will host up to four interns, leading to an initial intake of approximately 600 students from top institutions, including IITs, NITs, and AICTE-affiliated colleges. The Internship Portal offers flexible program durations of one month, two months, and six months to cater to varying academic and industry needs. Additionally, interns will receive a stipend of ₹20,000 per month to help with learning and professional development.
Alignment with National Education Policy 2020
This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes experiential learning, industry exposure, and improved employability through a flexible curriculum and credit-linked internships. The NHAI Internship Program goes beyond passive observation; it allows students to engage directly in projects, providing essential insights into the technical and managerial elements involved in National Highway development. Interns will gain firsthand knowledge about how highways are planned, engineered, and put into action.
Opportunities for Diverse Disciplines
While the program primarily targets Civil Engineering students, it also welcomes participants from IT, Electronics, and Electrical Engineering fields. This inclusivity is especially relevant for students interested in Advanced Traffic Management Systems and Electronic Toll Collection technologies.
Successful Kickoff and Future Prospects
The inaugural ‘Winter Internship’ received a positive response, with around 250 students participating. NHAI has also introduced a six-month internship for undergraduate engineering students, slated to begin on January 19, 2026. Currently, nearly 500 applications have already been received for this final-year program, with plans to extend the internship opportunities to postgraduate students in the future.
