New Tribal Freedom Fighters’ Museums to Honor Indian Heritage
The Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Shri Durgadas Uikey, announced in the Lok Sabha that a total of 11 Tribal Freedom Fighters’ Museums (TFFMs) have received approval across 10 states in India. This initiative aims to celebrate and raise awareness about the sacrifices and contributions of tribal communities in the country’s liberation struggle. The funding for these museums comes from the Ministry’s Centrally Sponsored Scheme, which includes programs to support Tribal Research Institutes as well as provisions under Article 275(1).
As of now, 4 museums have been inaugurated in three states: Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh, where there are two museums in operation. These institutions serve as vital cultural touchstones that commemorate the role of tribal fighters in India’s freedom movement.
Current Status of Museums
Among the remaining 7 museums, construction and curation efforts are underway in five states: Mizoram, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, and Gujarat, with completion expected by the end of 2026. The projects in Goa and Manipur are in the preliminary stages. In Goa, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) was finalized in February 2025, allowing for construction progress to commence. Meanwhile, Manipur is currently drafting its DPR, which is essential for moving forward with its museum project.
The Ministry maintains consistent oversight through regular meetings and workshops with state authorities to monitor and evaluate the developments of these museums. During these sessions, specific weekly targets are set to ensure timely execution, with ministry officials and experts conducting field visits to assess progress.
