New Search Engine Secures $1.1M Funding for Deep Internet Exploration

Zehra Naqvi, a 26-year-old entrepreneur and former consumer investor, is set to launch Lore, a new search platform designed for internet enthusiasts to explore their fandoms. With a background as a passionate fan girl during the 2010s, Naqvi aims to create a space where users can delve into their interests and connect with like-minded individuals. Lore has already secured $1.1 million in pre-seed funding and will officially unveil its offerings on October 6.

A Journey from Fandom to Entrepreneurship

Naqvi’s journey began in her teenage years when she became an avid follower of pop culture, particularly Marvel movies and One Direction. Her enthusiasm for these interests led her to accumulate a substantial following on social media platforms like Tumblr and Twitter, where she engaged deeply with the content. This experience ignited her passion for not just consuming culture but also contributing to it. By the age of 12, she had already started her own company, later pursuing a degree in art history at Columbia University. Her career took a turn when she became a consumer investor at Headline Ventures, where she honed her skills in understanding market trends and consumer behavior.

However, Naqvi felt a pull back to her roots. After leaving her position at Headline, she reflected on her early experiences of exploring fandoms online. She realized that despite spending countless hours researching her interests, there was no single platform that tracked her engagement. This realization inspired her to create Lore, a tool that would allow users to rediscover the joy of fandom in a more organized and engaging way.

Introducing Lore: A New Platform for Fandom

Lore is designed to be a comprehensive search platform that helps users navigate their interests in a more meaningful way. It aims to provide a personalized experience by allowing users to explore fan theories, cultural contexts, and hidden details related to their favorite topics. Naqvi envisions Lore as a way to reconnect with the joy of fandom, offering features that build a personalized graph of interests and deliver updates on fandom-related news.

The platform will enable users to dive deep into specific theories or broaden their perspective to see how different fandoms intersect. Naqvi describes this experience as “playing with knowledge,” emphasizing that Lore is not just about passive consumption but active engagement with content. While details about the platform’s functionality remain under wraps until its official launch, Naqvi is confident that Lore will fill a significant gap in the current digital landscape.

Funding and Future Plans

Lore has successfully raised $1.1 million in pre-seed funding, led by Village Global with participation from Precursor Ventures. Naqvi describes her fundraising journey as “obsessive,” reflecting her commitment to building a product that resonates with fans. The funds will be utilized to attract more users and conduct further product testing. Early experiments have shown promising engagement, with over 1,000 logins and nearly 24,000 searches conducted, indicating a strong demand for the platform.

As Naqvi prepares for Lore’s launch, she acknowledges the competitive landscape, noting that while other platforms like Reddit and Wikipedia serve similar functions, they do not cater specifically to fandoms. Lore aims to create a unique space that prioritizes user engagement and fosters a sense of community among fans. Naqvi’s vision is to make fandom a joyful and sacred experience, contrasting with the often fragmented and fast-paced nature of current social media.

Reimagining Fandom in the Digital Age

Naqvi believes that the future of social media should focus on deeper connections and shared passions rather than quick interactions. She envisions Lore as a “lurker-first” space, designed to be interactive and colorful, encouraging users to explore their interests without the pressure of social media’s typical dynamics. By prioritizing joy and creativity, Naqvi hopes to restore a sense of wonder to the internet.

In her view, consumer AI can be applied in innovative ways beyond traditional shopping or social networking. Lore represents an opportunity to redefine how fans engage with their interests, creating a platform that celebrates obsession rather than stigmatizing it. As the launch date approaches, Naqvi is excited about the potential impact of Lore on the fandom community and the broader digital landscape.
