New Rural Employment Act Promises 125 Days of Guaranteed Wages
The Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Act, 2025 is set to transform rural livelihoods across India. Effective from July 1, 2026, the Act aims to enhance job security in rural areas by guaranteeing 125 days of wage employment annually to households willing to engage in unskilled manual work. This legislation will provide a robust framework for creating durable assets, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and bolstering rural infrastructure.
The Act adopts a Whole-of-Government Approach, enabling cooperation among various Central and State Government initiatives. It emphasizes projects related to water conservation, core rural infrastructure, and measures to mitigate extreme weather events. Additionally, the Act advocates for the use of technology in planning and monitoring, ensuring transparency and effective implementation.
In a landmark move, the funding structure under this Act allocates resources in a 90:10 ratio between the Central Government and State Governments for North Eastern and Himalayan States, while all other regions will follow a 60:40 distribution. For the financial year 2026–27, the central allocation stands at ₹95,692.31 crore, marking the largest budgetary provision for rural employment to date. With state contributions, the total investment in rural employment is projected to surpass ₹1.51 lakh crore, poised to significantly uplift rural economies.
Under the new Act, the provision for guaranteed employment increases from 100 days to 125 days per financial year. Moreover, it strengthens the rights of rural workers by introducing unemployment allowances if employment is not provided in a timely manner, as well as compensation for wage payment delays. A user-friendly mechanism for registering and demanding employment has also been implemented, with wages disbursed through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT-SPARSH) platform, ensuring timely and transparent payments directly to workers’ bank accounts.
The VB-G RAM G Act, 2025 incorporates a comprehensive framework for monitoring and grievance redressal, facilitating effective scheme execution and benefit delivery to eligible rural households. Monitoring is conducted through a technology-enabled Management Information System (MIS), alongside periodic reviews, social audits, and regular inspections. A structured grievance redressal system at both Block and District levels further supports the resolution of any issues arising from the scheme’s implementation.
The Ministry of Rural Development will continue to provide technical support and capacity-building initiatives to states and union territories to ensure the scheme’s effective rollout. These efforts are designed to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficient service delivery as part of the VB-G RAM G initiative.
