New Railway Line to Boost Capacity and Transform Travel

The Ministry of Railways has approved the construction of a new fourth railway line that will stretch 26.40 kilometres between Baikunth and Urkura, with an estimated budget of ₹426.01 crore. This initiative, part of the South East Central Railway network, aims to address the pressing capacity issues facing this key transport corridor.

The Baikunth–Urkura route is critical as it forms an essential segment of the Bilaspur–Raipur–Nagpur main line* which is integrated into the highly trafficked **Mumbai–Howrah railway corridor. The current operations on this line are facing saturation, highlighting the immediate need for expansion to accommodate the growing demand for rail services.

Enhancing Congestion Relief and Efficiency

The introduction of the fourth line is expected to relieve congestion significantly, leading to a smoother flow of train services. With the additional capacity, there will be room for more passenger and coaching services, thereby reducing delays and improving overall punctuality on this heavily utilized section of the railway.

Boosting Freight Capacity

Moreover, this project will enable the movement of an estimated 14.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA)** of additional freight traffic. This enhancement in freight capacity is projected to provide Indian Railways with an additional annual revenue of around ₹61.70 crore, commencing from the first year following the line’s commissioning.

Supporting Regional Development

The region surrounding Baikunth and Urkura has been rapidly developing, particularly with the establishment of **power plants, coal mines, and steel and cement industries**. The new railway line will ensure faster and more reliable transportation of bulk commodities, which is essential for supporting industrial growth and strengthening the supply chain in the area.

This initiative is strategically identified under the Energy, Cement and Mineral Corridor, demonstrating Indian Railways’ commitment to enhancing infrastructure in vital economic zones.

A Transformative Impact on the Region

Upon completion, the new railway line connecting Baikunth and Urkura is poised to revolutionize passenger travel, offering quicker, more reliable journeys. Additionally, it will bolster freight operations, significantly supporting local industries and contributing to the economic growth of the region. This development marks a significant step forward in enhancing the railway infrastructure and service quality in one of India’s busiest transport corridors.
