New Rail Projects Announced for Jammu and Kashmir Connectivity
The Indian government has initiated a significant upgrade to the rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly focusing on the Srinagar-Baramulla rail section. A survey has been sanctioned for a new railway line that will stretch 34 kilometers from Sopore to Kupwara. However, this project has been deemed infeasible, leading to its cancellation. In a move to bolster transportation in the border regions, detailed project reports (DPRs) for several other projects have been developed, indicating ongoing efforts to enhance rail connectivity.
Among the projects underway is the doubling of the existing Qazigund-Srinagar-Budgam railway line, covering a distance of 118 kilometers. Additionally, a new line from Baramulla to Uri is planned, which will be approximately 40 kilometers long. These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to improving rail infrastructure in the region, which is vital for both transportation and economic development.
Consultation Process and Project Sanction
Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Railways, emphasized that after the preparation of detailed project reports, obtaining project sanctions requires consultations with multiple stakeholders, including state governments. Necessary approvals from agencies such as NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Finance are also integral parts of this process. Due to the dynamic nature of project sanctioning, fixed timelines for implementation cannot be guaranteed.
Impact of the USBRL Project
Recently, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which spans a total length of 272 kilometers, has been commissioned, greatly impacting the districts of Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Budgam, and Baramulla. The USBRL project has not only provided seamless connectivity but has also played a crucial role in the socio-economic upliftment of the region. It has generated over 5 crore man-days of employment, showcasing its contribution to local job creation.
Additionally, to support this rail link, the construction of more than 215 kilometers of approach roads has taken place, which includes a tunnel and over 320 small bridges. This extensive road network is expected to significantly improve the connectivity of the local population to other areas, thus enhancing their socio-economic conditions.
With reliable all-weather rail connectivity established between the valley and the broader Indian Railway network, tourism in the region is poised for substantial growth. This development aligns with the government’s broader vision of enhancing infrastructure and boosting the economy of Jammu and Kashmir.
